Showing effort does not require spending money, quite the opposite.
I think a nice candlelit dinner at your home would be nice? Do you drive? You could go on a long drive followed by a picnic?
As someone else suggested, a movie night.
My girlfriend and I like nothing more on a Saturday night than to cook up some party food, get some cheap plonk and watch the X Factor or something equally trashy. We don't have to spend lots of money on each other to show our love. We do that in the bedroom

And if you really feel like going out, one of the things we really enjoyed was going into the country for a drive, admiring the countryside, then picking a lovely little pub, had a drink each, sipped very leisurely, then drove home. It took up a good 3-4 hours and was incredibly enjoyable for the cost of 2 drinks and a spot of petrol.0

Picnic on the carpet.
DVD and popcorn.
2 for 1 voucher for somewhere like pizza express.
If it's ok weather just going for a walk.
Cooking a new meal together you could pick something adventurous to laugh at when it goes wrong.
Look on groupon.
And er the obvious!!0 -
Do you have a wii console?! They can be quite good fun – me and OH spent a couple of hours playing bowling while having a couple of drinks last Friday evening and we didn’t even have to leave the warmth of the living room!!
Don’t believe the hype that they are for kids – Im 33 and OH is in his 40’s!!0 -
Weather permitting, snowball fight by torchlight?
Find out if she has any hidden talents like Scrabble?
With friend/neighbour's cooperation, borrow their dog to take for a walk?
Make her laugh.0 -

Well a candlelit dinner or a drive followed by a picnic costs money doesnt it ?.0 -
I would come clean about the fact that money is tight at present and ask her if she has any ideas as well. If she likes and enjoys your company she won't mind what you do.
Also could you invite friends round and ask if they could bring along food and or drink so that you all share the cost, you can play games/cards whatever you all like doing.
The best times I can remember when young with a family were the times all our neighbours and friends got together at each other's houses. We were all broke but somehow managed to have a great time by bringing along any food or drink we may have had and improvising to create a party atmosphere.
Also we took it in turn to babysit for each other so everyone had a night out.0 -

Not as much as the cinema, drinks or a fancy meal. You can make a little go a long way.
There are free things to do such as long walks, films at home etc.
Just saying that you don't have to spend a lot of money to impress a girl0 -

And if she needs a lot of money spent to be impressed, she's probably not the right one for you anyway!0
