Dating on a tight budget

Hi All,

I am looking for some help.

I have just starting dating a lovely girl, but being a single father a lot of my wages are taken up with providing a home for my son and other bits and pieces so just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what we could do for dates that don't cost the earth or even better if they are free.

We spend a lot of time in the evenings together when my son is in bed so we cant really go out. although there is opportunities to.

If it helps, as my name states I live in Lincolnshire.

Thanks for reading

  • If you can't go out in the evening, look at your local library for dvds. Have a trashy movie night (B movie horrors etc) with homemade popcorn and a hotdog each.

Also get a cookbook and find something weird and wonderful to try cooking together - try making chocolates or preserving fruits etc.

Board games can really throw you back to childhood, as can card games, Twister etc.

If you do get out, look at museums, galleries, student plays, local theatre groups, or go on voucher sites to find cheap deals for things to do.

Are you talking about things to do in the evenings with/without your son, during daytime/weekends, or in the house when your son's asleep?

There is a restaurant for people who want to date on a budget. It's called Nando's.

Orange Wednesday's for cheap night at cinema.

Look out for free events and special offer listings in your local "What's on" guide.

I also like Bargainbetty's suggestion of making homemade !!!!!! and hot dogging each other.

I take it you haven't been to Nandos in a while then...... it's not actually that cheap.

OH and I were £30 for the two of us the last time we went.

I must admit I've not been since 2010.

Its just KFC (but more expensive) for people who know how to use a knife and fork. I don't rate it at all.

Well unfortunatley it is going to be a bit boring for her staying in all the time at your house whilst your sons asleep. Once or twice fair enough, but all the time.. shes going to be bored stiff I'm afraid. Even getting DVDs etc will wear thin after a while.
You need to be doing intersting things on a weekend then, both days to compensate and maybe get a babysitter during the week so you can go out together like to the pictures.
Cooking together during the week is a good idea, also on a weekend local walks, days out with a packed lunch/bike rides etc.
I think you do need to pay for decent days/nights out as well as most women I know do like to go out and do things. It doesnt have to be right expensive but you have to show some effort really.

Lots of things. When my OH and I met, we were both pretty broke. I bought a truckload of really cheesy Japanese horror off Amazon on payday, I'm talking £1 or £2 a DVD, and we spent lots of evenings having a really good laugh.

We also did a lot of cooking together, baking. That was also tonnes of fun, probably more fun when things went wrong than right!

If either of you is on Orange, you can get Orange Wednesdays and go 2 for one on a Wednesday if you want to get your son involved, then one if you is free and you pay for a child's ticket for him.

I can't disagree enough with the comment saying that she'll get bored staying in all of the time. 99% of the things we did together were indoors because going out was expensive, but both of us understood the situation and instead of being miserable and moaning about not being able to do anything, we made the best of it.

Board games and a bottle of wine is also pretty fun, although you're quite limited with two, but there are tonnes out there.

As for a date night when you're staying in, make it like a restaurant. Get a cheap-o table cloth (paper if needed), couple of candles, set the table, then cook a three course dinner for her (or she does it for you). You can do this pretty cheaply and make it really nice, a cheese souffle doesn't cost a lot if you get basic things, stew with chicken thighs, then just a chocolate mousse.

You can also always follow up the meal with a couples bath, lots of candles :)
