TSB didnt open an account?

I applied online for a new free current account from TSB. I dont want any credit, just an account and sort code attached to a debit card. I received a letter saying that the processing center was experiencing technical issues and would not be able to open the account, but if I would like, I can go to a TSB branch and open one there.

Ok, on the face of it, no big deal appart from the fact that there is no TSB branch within reasonable distance and frankly, even if there was, it is absurd to expect you do go there. However, thinking about it, this letter is weird on a number of levels.

1) If they had a technical problem, why not simply resolve that issue and continue with the processing instead of sending me a letter telling me they couldnt do any more?

2) If they didnt want me for a customer, why offer me the option of actually going to a TSB branch?

Very strange. Does anyone know if they're having problems processing new accounts or something?

  • I got this letter a few weeks ago and decided that maybe they were having a problem with the volume of applications so did not have time to do the checks by computer for identity. So I applied again online hoping they would not be as overwhelmed and would do the checks.

Today I received a letter stating they had opened an account for me, just a basic classic account, I assume you have to add enhance yourself. The branch sort code is Sheldon well over a 100 miles away, it is their main office for applications.

I have to take either my passport or driving licence along with signed forms, into a branch. Worked out where one is, and used AA route master to find it.

They give you 30 days to do this, the application was dated 7th October 2013 but arrived today, don't know where it has been all that time!!!

I applied on-line about the middle of September. Received a letter on the 27 September ( which had been dated 17 September ) requesting the return of the enclosed mandate form and two forms of ID. As I live in Northern Ireland no local branches, this I duly did. After several phone calls to them they stated that on the 09 October they had received my letter and ID forms and advised me my confirmation letter and internet banking details would be posted on 10 October. Needless to say I'm not expecting that letter any time soon. There's certainly some problem in their operating system somewhere - due to high level of demand, perhaps.

I opened my account online the experience wasn't very good.

The applications are not being credit scored live they are being done by Experian hence the delays.

It took me about 3 weeks to get my account opened in the end.

Oh well, TSB lost out in the end. I applied to Lloyds instead and my new card arrived yesterday which I am assuming means that they have opened an account up for me. Considering that up until last week, they were still the same company and I cant imagine that their IT systems have suddenly changed completely, I dont see why TSB is having such trouble.

  • Don't know how other MSE forum members were able to open 3 accounts when they went into a branch. There was no one in the branch when I went in, but the cashier seemed flummoxed when I told her I had to bring my passport in for identification despite giving her all the paperwork). She said I would also need proof of address but the manager who was seated nearby corrected her. By the time she had photocopied my passport there was a dozen people waiting to be attended to so never had the nerve to ask about opening more accounts.

I too was told i could open a TSB account, since i am already with Lloyds, but they rejected the application for a basic free account, leaving me having to use Bank of Scotland banks. I was told that TSB HAD TO open accounts for Lloyds customers in Scotland.

So, having been rejected because Experian said no, i am stuck in Scotland with a Lloyds account and not a single Lloyds bank in the entire country - i am confused at how this works, i did not think TSB could refuse me a basic account.

The circus that is TSB still continues. Leading on from my earlier post I thought it a good idea just to ring up to make sure their confirmation letter was on its way to me. Surprise, surprise no one at account opening knew anything about it and they even denied speaking to me about it in the first place. Asked to speak to a Supervisor / Manager who informed me the only way they would issue me with an account was if I got either my doctor or solicitor to endorse a copy of my passport. Account opening have absolutely no idea what they are doing, its the " headless chicken " act.

    There has been a misunderstanding.

LloydsTSB Scotland became TSB, so all Scottish customers automatically became TSB customers. Since your account is branded Lloyds (based in England/Wales) you never banked with LloydsTSB Scotland.

Lloyds customers can now perform basic transactions like withdrawals/deposits at Bank of Scotland - is there something else you need the account to do?
