  • Any help on this or useful suggestions if I really can't reclaim 7 for either machine. I cannot afford to buy two windows 7 OS right now and am reluctant to leap into Linux but need to sort something out.
The Netbook did not have a legal licence for Windows 7. Probably just a COA for Windows XP Home and maybe dual booting with Android.

But you would not ever get a dual OEM licence for XP and Windows 7 on a Netbook. Especially an eMachine Netbook.

I can run a check on the Motherboard to double-check. Will do that in a bit.

Are you running that laptop on 1GB of RAM or has that been upgraded?

Have you updated to the latest BIOS?

Yours is BIOS update process 4

    Thanks. Appreciated.

Toshiba: I'll check re bios update but probably not. I'm using the netbook right now.

the netbook I upgraded memory to 2GB.
It had windows 7 preloaded but it was uninstalled by a borrower. I had hoped I could use it somehow as a legal and less costly platform to upgrade or at least use starter on this

    You are getting distracted.

Have you a backup of your important data on the laptop? You will have to run a clean install once you've updated the BIOS above.

Close down any applications that you have running before attempting the BIOS update.

Well possibly but people are trying to help so a polite response as to why a suggestion is 'not' viable may help others reading this too Nifty.

Backup: I'll need to do that first as it's become my main home unit now.

    Closing apps:
Yes. I know but thanks again and I'll tackle it later when I've seen to my hens.

  • Do you have the laptop ready? We'll go through one at a time. The less you get distracted, the faster we'll be done. :)
    I'm on holiday from tomorrow.

I'm in the kitchen in a nightdress and wellington boots with a bit of toast in one hand and a bucket of mixed corn in the other. Does that sound ready??

20 mins and I'll be back and get the laptop fired up but I need to find a memory stick with some space too.
....and distracted is my 'normal' state of being.

Back up the Netbook contents too.

I have to be 'efficient', as I have paperwork to complete and then to pack and ready myself for a holiday tomorrow. So, that means you have to be efficient too. :)
My mum does the chickens thing too. But I'm a city lad.

I asked about the RAM in the laptop. Is that still 1GB?

If the eMachines had a Windows 7 upgrade we will look at that in due course.

    Go, go, go, go go....

Ermm. Why really when I do not as yet have any new OS to instal ( and I would prefer an upgrade if possible too) do I have to wipe everything down to the knuckle and possibly lose everything including being potentially unable to instal even an OS? Surely that is something so major only for when something is seriously wrong/stuffed anyway....and it isn't.
No need on the laptop. No need on the netbook either. At most do the recovery thing on that to see if it brings back the factory initial stuff.

The only thing which could be considered a noticeable change is the extra memory on the netbook and that's hardly a big deal. Never had to go through wiping everything and reinstalling because of adding memory before. Ever.
I'm not going to get a legal version of windows by updating the BIOS am I?

  • The laptop and the netbook both have 2GB. I think that may always have been so with the laptop. It can go to 4GB which I'm planning to do asap.

  • If you were that smart, you wouldn't be here asking questions or reading until your "eyes bleed".

It works in the way that it works. If you want to run an upgrade, buy a Windows 7 Upgrade licence.

So if you want this done, it's best that you follow instruction instead of annoying your helper. ;)

All the threads in all the world and you had to walk into mine......Just my luck to get some child out for a Sunday morning Troll. :rotfl:

BTW you've got it wrong on almost every point.

So if you want to move forward, back up your data. If you have important things that you don't want to lose, they should already be backed up...or are you waiting for something to go wrong before you do it?
Clean install is what you are going to have to do, at the very least....

What do you think will happen if you run a Factory Restore?

You will lose your data anyway and end up with Windows XP and Windows Vista...with no previous data.

So, let's not waste time 'debating' if you actually want this done.

Shame that you didn't take the time to look around before you made your comment.
