  • No, XP/Vista keys are valid for XP/Vista.
You don't have any rights to Windows 7. No product key or COA; no rights.

If there was a 'licenced' Windows 7 Starter on the Netbook when new, there would be a COA for Windows 7 Starter on the underside.

What is the brand and full model number of the Netbook?

If you didn't buy the Windows 7 disc upgrade with Product Key for the laptop(at least pay for the 'shipping' at the time of the offer, you are out of luck there too.

Again; Brand name and full model number of laptop.

I don't remember there being any directive to buy anything for the Laptop ( Toshiba Sat'Pro L300) to switch from Vista to windows 7 but you're probably right. I left for 4 months in Asia and had to get used to Vista so by the time I got back and checked it out it must have been 6 months. I bought the netbook some months later before I had to go out again because the Toshiba was a nightmare to lug around on and off boats and buses! It's a solid home Laptop though.

  • Are you self employed to be taking your laptop to work? Surely a win 7 pro license can be written off against tax.

You can pick up Win 7 Pro for £30 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/MICROSOFT-WINDOWS-Professional-Version-Reinstall/dp/B00AY1EF1K

Yes and none of this would have been a problem 9 months ago but I developed a debilitating auto immune condition triggered by Dengue Fever so lost my two Major income contracts. I'm back to square one and it'll be a while before I start to earn again. Hence the moneysaving/stretching/conserving. Otherwise I'd just buy them and get on with it.

I'm not too sure about all those cheap OEM OS online. I have never used microsoft phone support etc but I sure don't need to end up with a dodgy download or copy disc which leaves me in the back of beyond unable to hit a deadline.

i would never purchase this, as with being a Dell customer for over 15 years, dell dont provide licence discs in the way this listing is, what he is selling the backup disc a Licence key he has got with a PC/Laptop from Dell, the the key and the win 7 would have been pre installed on their system the COA sticker would be on his system underneath and also on the OS book as he shows in the listing.

Netbook has nothing on it. It may have worn off. It's been well used in a lot of hot humid places. I don't seem to have any hard copy paperwork on it anywhere either. Apart from checking system spec ( nothing there) I wouldn't know where to find that.....

Is a flavour of Linux a possibility? It's free, as is a wide range of software available for it.

I have been dithering over taking the leap into Linux for years. after this frustrating voyage of discovery around Microsofts 'helpful' website it's looking distinctly attractive!

The Netbook did not have a legal licence for Windows 7. Probably just a COA for Windows XP Home and maybe dual booting with Android.

But you would not ever get a dual OEM licence for XP and Windows 7 on a Netbook. Especially an eMachine Netbook.

I can run a check on the Motherboard to double-check. Will do that in a bit.

Are you running that laptop on 1GB of RAM or has that been upgraded?
Have you updated to the latest BIOS?

Yours is BIOS update process 4

Give it a try. You can get a Live CD version to run without installing, but it will not be as fast to load as a disk based version. If you can create an extra partition or install an extra hard drive, you can have a dual boot system until you get a feel for whichever you prefer.

Exactly. Ebay, Amazon and the net in general are awash with these but unless you're very clued up or a tech who is building systems you'd probably run into problems with instal and or usage.

The product key is linked to a specific unit relative to 7 points. Cannot remember precisely but it's something like the processor, motherboard and graphics card must all be the original as recorded at activation.
There are ways and means round that for the savvy.
Personally I need no hassle 'legal' usage.

    You are getting distracted.
Have you a backup of your important data on the laptop? You will have to run a clean install once you've updated the BIOS above.

Close down any applications that you have running before attempting the BIOS update.
