What external hard drive to buy
Comments
-
if you open a google account you can store them there. send them to an email address..then transfer to a photo bucket...
All of which takes a LOT longer than selection and copy/paste within the OP's own PC
btw what happens if you external drive brakes down?
The OP keeps copies on his main drive and the external drive. If one fails (breaks), there's a backup on the other.
Or, they get a second internal drive, an external drive, and backs them up to both.0 -
Am I trying to buy a sata hard drive? Is that the same thing as disc space? There is one on Digital Fusion uk for£63.36 but that's only 250gb. I've watched the video on YouTube and seems easy enough to fit as ive a tiny bit of experince as i fitted more ram. The pc currently has Capacity is 148 gb. Free space is 3.19 g. Used space 146gb. I'll also buy an external hard drive as I do need to have back up store of photos. Thanks.
Ps what I've been doing is putting a copy of photos on a disc or a memory stick as well as on the hard drive of my pc. But discs and sticks are a bit of a pain as often it says my photo batch is too large for the disc or stick so I do need to work out a better routine including actually printing them and getting an external hard drive.0 -
What is using up 146GB?

Sorry 67gb should come off that total as its deleting temp internet files. One of my problems is that I don't know how to manage photos on iPhone properly. I wish colleges would do evening classes or something as I've not got a clue how to manage photos or how to manage my itunes account and I've had my phone 3 years! After I've imported photos from iPhone I don't delete the photos on the iPhone. I only delete some as I like to keep some to show friends. Consequently every time I import photos from my iPhone it imports them all again not just the new ones. So is 67 gb enough left do you think? My strategy now is to learn about iPhone photos, save on pc and the new external hard drive, then go to Asda or max spelemann type places and print them off every month and get them to save them to a disc. Mum says a disc is £2 or something like that. Any better ideas are most welcome.0 -
that's your internal hard disk space problem solved then, no need for a new internal, just buy a 500GB or 1TB portable hard disk, and backup to it.
set your browser to delete temporary internet files automatically, and set ccleaner to run at startup, to clean temp files automatically
a blank DVD is around 10 pence, and holds 4.7GB
The easiest way to manage, is to create a directory, or series of directories with dates or subject matter titles, and copy from iphone to c: drive

a windows.old directory suggests windows has been repaired/installed twice or upgraded, what's the history of the machine, which OS did it come with, and which is installed now
dvd's hold a lot more than a cd, and cost about the same
what were you using to delete temp files, and what said it was going to clean up 67GB!!

I bought 2 dell machines at same time. They are vista home premium. Originally 2gb ram but both are now 4gb ram. This one has been a problem since day 1. The other one has been fine. This one had an intermittent fault on the ram which I didn't understand for a few years and which repairers never sorted out. I paid the same man £35 every time it went wrong and he would just reinstall windows. He didn't reinstall it correctly as eventually I bought extra ram and reinstalled windows myself and realised he hadn't done it properly because I compared it to the other one and things like service pack 1 or service pack 2 weren't put back on and all updates done etc. it was all working fine until April 2013 I think when the graphics card caused a problem so has been removed and is now just on board graphics card but that's caused another problem where if you leave it in on for a long time it goes to sleep and flashes orange power button. Web searches of that fault have suggested its a graphic card problem or a mother board problem but no poster has gone back to post their solution so I don't know how to diagnose that. But both machines have got this lack of storage space problem. Windows has therefore been reinstalled many times since purchase in 2007.0 -
reading between the lines, that looks like a series of misdiagnosis and bodge jobs
intermittent ram faults are incredibly rare.
You may be better off, buying a 1TB portable usb drive for around £50, backup both machines to it, using macrium reflect free disk image backup not clone, create macrium reflect boot disc, and wiping the machine, and reinstalling windows again.
copy your important photo's to the other machines, and dvd's beforehand.
if the factory restore partition is still intact, that's the easiest way of reinstalling windows, after backing up
going to sleep or into hibernation is normal, if pressing power on brings it back to life!!

I don't know what a restore partition is so must look into that.
Re the hard drive - I was coming to same conclusion as you to use one portable hard drive for both machines but one is at mine and one is grandmas who is a distance away so not sure now.0
