Surely the majority of HL customers were logging in yesterday to trade in one form or another and they weren't able to do that. The systems were not working fine and gave the error "Online Share Trading Currently unavailable" when I tried.
HL says "We win prestigious awards every year for delivering exceptional services to clients", somehow I think they may be an also ran this year.
For balance I was pointing out that the problems were limited to certain actions.
I don't know what percentage of HL customers use share dealing but I'd hazard a guess that it was less than 25% and probably less than 10% on a daily basis.
So logging onto their site, buying/selling funds, setting up DDs and checking account balances across all my accounts worked fine. That could well have been the case for 90% of HL customers hence the email from the CE that might have appeared dismissive to those who were affected.
It is a shame if many of the people having problems were new customers to HL that have not experienced their normal very good levels of service.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
I've put in 2 complaints to HL about Friday but have not got £25 compensation. Is this because those who got it had RM shares they were trying to buy sell whereas I was trying to buy other shares with the money I'd placed with them in the hope of getting RM shares (i.e. over £10K)?0

You need to check the Ts & Cs of your agreement with HL to see if they agree to compensate people who are unable to use the site at any particular moment. It also raises the interesting question of whether you should send them money to say thank you for an attempted trade that ended up going down in value!
I imagine there is a disclaimer about technical issues."I don't mind if a chap talks rot. But I really must draw the line at utter rot." - PG Wodehouse0 -
I haven't had a reply to my complaint yet but my account is showing a commission refund for £11.95 ...0

Possibly a silly question, but does HL automatically deduct tax etc as a savings account would? I've done a lot of trades in the past year and the thought of having to fill out some sort of tax return for them is making my head spin0

deduct from income or from capital gains?
income will come with basic rate tax effectively already deducted, i.e. you only need to do anything if you're in a different tax band.
capital gains are left entirely up to you.0 -
I see, thank you! I see the limit is ~£10k which I won't even come close to hitting, so I should be okay0
