I can't believe the saucepans caused the divorce on their own!
So what sort of gifts do you consider "suitable" then?

The saucepans were the final straw and ultimately reflected how neglected she was by him.

For my wife suitable gifts could be shoes, handbags, jewellery, music, ebooks , city breaks, experiences such as scuba diving, clay pigeon shooting, horse riding and rally driving and silly little gifts.

So far this year the hints have been based on a Kindle and a coat she has spotted in Harrogate.

Well, all I can say is that I'm glad we are all different - I can't think of worse gifts to receive than shoes, handbags & jewellery! I approve of the kindle though ;)

If shoes & handbags work for you, great :T but please don't assume everyone would like them & don't look down on somebody who buys their wife saucepans or their girlfriend a new mixer!

Well they work for my wife, but Sorry I do look down on men who buy houshold items for their other halves unless specifically asked for. They would have to be very lazy or stupid to be doing that.

We don't buy each other anything , what's the point? All our money is joint.if we want / need anything we buy it.
This is what I want to do too. In previous years we've agreed that we will only buy each other a token gift and put the rest towards <random item we both want>. Unfortunately hubby tends to agree to this then then goes out and buys me stuff anyway :o so I've kind of given up.

I'm going to try again this year.....I wonder if I can convince him that one Pandora charm chosen by him (he has great taste) is more than plenty if he really MUST buy me something. And if he sticks to it then we can then get the KitchenAid as a reward.

Kitchen gadgets are definitely asked-for in our house....on both sides ;) I actually think that kitchen gadgets make great gifts as they are often wants rather than needs (many people can't justify the cost of them - yep I can bake a cake and he can make bread perfectly well without a KitchenAid....but we really really want one).

I dislike gifts for the sake of gifts, and would much prefer something I can actually use. A couple of years ago my mum bought me a garlic peeler...I would never have gone out and bought one myself, but its great and I use it every week.
  • I start making hints to my wife about items of workshop equipment from machine mart or screw fix, which I really NEED, like an angle grinder, or a dremel, or a rear brake pad wind back tool (saving it's cost in the first pad change I did). But her response "I'm not going there, I'm a woman"
    Then she buys '!!!!!!' I don't want.
I even gave her the catalogue with the page and item number and catalogue number and a choice of 5 items all under 20 quid so she could order on line. But no. Apparently I have to pretend to be pleased with a DVD of a film that I don't want to watch, and a CD of a band that I don't like, and aftershave to add to my collection which I'm never going to slap on in 100 years.
I'm useless at buying presents, but when I ask for hints, am told that I've been married 23 years, and I should know what she wants.

I write my OH a list!

It has a selection of things on that I'd like and I know are in his budget, and he can pick from it what to get me. I still get a surprise, as I don't know exactly which things out of what's on the list he'll choose, and he knows I will like them. Some of it's also vague, like "chocolates" but then he'll still manage to pick nice ones!

He's actually quite good at getting gifts I'd like, but bless him he gets so stressed out over the whole performance of sorting out buying and wrapping gifts for an occasion. It helps both of us that I do this wishlist.

I never ment to cause any offense to the people who like getting house hold items, i think that is great if it what you want! I often buy my dad kitchen items for xmas and he loves them and often asks for them. I feel bad for people who dream of gettin a lovely thoughtful gift from their OH and get a deep fat fryer (or something similar!) whenreally is the OH that wants it!

i normally help my dad get my mum presents and only twice he has said oh its fine iv sorted it (then refuses to tell me what he has got so i cant warn my mum lol) and both times have been a bit of a disaster - once got her a worm farm! his theory she likes fishing so she can have her own worm stash! her face was a picture!

2nd time was tea towels and a ironing board cover! she did not speak to him all day and then made him take her sale shopping to make up for it!! he makes sure he asks me what she would like now!
although i must give him credit for her 50th this year he brought her and ipad off his own back and she absolutely loves it!!

LOL.. my OH got a fryer for Christmas a couple of years ago, from my mother, he loves it. She got him a bottle of oil to go with it.. haha.

I write OH a list throughout the year... it has 2 pairs of boots, 5 sofas (hey, one can dream!!) socks, a couple of rings (not a hint at all.) and a few items of clothing... so far!!
