Nope, I have no inside knowledge, but I have monitored fares and they certainly can go down as well as up, in fact I've just booked a flight which was cheaper than last week's price. That wouldn't happen if what you write is true.Jamie_Carter wrote: »Do you actually work for them?
The reason I ask is because I know for certain that the system used to be: the first so many seats at the cheapest price, then the next so many seats at the next price up, and so on. Then if you buy the last seats on the plane then you will pay the top price. This is why they used to only let you make group bookings of up to 8 people. Otherwise you could book all 130 seats for £16 each, and the airline would make a huge loss. However they now average the seat price out for group bookings.
I think you're referring to the old system where economy was split into 7 or so fare bands, but things will be a lot more sophisticated these days, there'll be some complicated and obviously commercially sensitive algorithm to maximise profits from a flight. Or rather maximise profits overall - maximising profits for a flight could be counter-productive (eg like standby was).0 -
The flights are basically what the market will pay. They can go up and down.
Ryanair started high last year to try and mug the early bookers. It didn't quite work the way they hoped so they may try a different approach this year. They have made big promises to a lot of airports to increase traffic, so they will need to get more bums on seats one way or another.
I predict, lower prices and being "nicer" this year.0 -
EJ, along with most airlines use some form of yield management to set prices.
Prices do not always start low and rise towards take off day, if the systems show a lack of bookings against forecast, the system may well reduce the price in order to attract more bookings and bring the forecast and the actual lines closer together.
Of course, it works the other way tooChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
trying to work this out,if you fly in july from edinburgh to palma its £38 per bag,but for the same flight in august its only £33.another sign easy jet are getting greedy0

scotty1971,
its not greed, its supply and demand. Edinburgh Trades hols are 1st fortnight in July. Schools go back mid Aug. July is the busy time. They charge a premium.
Alternative = AVIOS
This July, to Spain, we are BA CLUB EUROPE X 2 RTN 30K Avios pp + £50 each
WE GET (each person)
Hand Luggage + laptop/briefcase/handbag
2 X HOLD LUGGAGE 32KG max pp
BA Lounge ACCESS Edinburgh + LGW + AGP +LGW
Complimentary drinks + meal/snack onboard
priority check in
A family of 4 can do this for 60K Avios+ £140. economy. miss out lounge + priority check in + your luggage is down to 23 KG pp
How ?
£50 Top Cash Back to Tesco = 5K club Card points= 12000 Avios
100 used inkjets (£80 off ebay)= 10K clubcard points = 24000 Avios
Amex Gold preferd rewards card £2K spend (3vs into NS&I acc) 22K Avios bonus
4K avios for supermarket spend for above
150 bonus Club card points per £50 3v spend = 2000/50 = 150 x 40 = 6000 cc points = 14.4K Avios
500 CC points for Skylander pre order £5 each X box, Wii, PS3 = 1500 CC points (x 2 accounts ) = 3K CCpoints =7200 Avios (£30 spend)
1000 CC points for Call of Duty Ghosts pre order £5 each X box, Wii, PS3 = 3K cc points (x 2 accounts) = 6K CC points = 14400 Avios (£30 Spend)
Thats the bonus stuff.
We also spend aprox £400 per month in Tesco on normal spending without the bonus vouchers.
Thats 800 Avios via AMEX (2 MR per £1)
+
400 CC points = 960 Avios
so 1760 Avios x 12 months = 21120 AVIOS
PS the 2 cans of stella Cidre Ive had writing this have earned me.
4 Amex points = 4 Avios
2 Club card points = 4.8 Avios
1 club card point because I brought my own bag = 2.4 Avios
1 club card point for recycling = 2.4 Avios
TOTAL 13.6 AVIOS
Although its a painful process, I recycle aprox 3000 cans per year (not just me, friends + family collect them for me) - 1500 club card points = 3600 Avios

What if some people had cancelled??
I wouldn't be surprised if it was more complicated now. And that prices may be reduced if the seats on a flight aren't selling.0 -

Not really. If they can guarantee a full flight in August, but not in July, then the average fuel cost per bag can be spread over more passengers.0 -

The high season for the whole of the UK is during the school holidays, especially the summer holidays. That is the busiest time for all airlines.0 -
English or Scottish holidays? You realise that in Scotland they have completely different holidays to England, so there is no such thing as "high season for the whole of the UK". We've had some cracking deals from Glasgow (even packages) in the English holidays when Scotland were in schoolJamie_Carter wrote: »The high season for the whole of the UK is during the school holidays,
No it isn't. Half terms are generally busier since everyone goes and returns at the same time. In summer people travel at different times, and also at Easter especially since the Easter hols vary a lot between areas. Also on some routes, especially non traditional holiday destinations, the "family on holiday" hardly makes a dent in the passenger numbers.especially the summer holidays. That is the busiest time for all airlines.
We've had some pretty cheap deals in the school summer holidays, on both budget airlines and traditional airlines. Best was EasyJet to Milan for hol in lake Garda a few years ago, £50 return each inc baggage in August. You won't get the very cheapest prices in the school hols but you can still find bargains.0
