I'm still giggling about the "Bright" OH with his GCSE in Business Studies (or maybe she just misunderstood what BS stood for ) who apparently works seven days a week plus (must have a time machine) fitting gas boilers but doesn't know how to read a gas meter......... .I'm not contenplating turning off the lights, but that sometimes seams to be the only option open to me!
As in the lights are on but nobody is home ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Duchy - sounds like you had your meter a while ago. All the ones installed for the last five years track the debt and stop recovering when it is paid off. You can see the balance reducing on the meter.one thing to watch out for is that once it is paid off it continues to "collect the debt" until they reset the meterWill look into this pre pay meter, but looks expensive.
The prepay meter will charge the same price as a quarterly bill would, so more than direct debit, but it sounds like you've lost that if you can't agree a new monthly rate.
If you don't choose to have the PP meter fitted, they will go to court, get a warrant and force it to be fitted. Along the way they will add night on £300 to your debt.
If you do go for the PP meter get into the habit of topping up regularly, and try and build up a buffer before the cold weather kicks in.0
