If you don't want to travel so far, have you considered Edinburgh?
We've just come back from a weekend there and it was brilliant, there was so much to do/see and everyone was so friendly. 2 days wasn't long enough, we'll definitely go back for longer next time.

Rome is good, we're going to Nice on Saturday that's been £350 each

You need to decide on what temperature your happy with.
The cheaper operators like ryanair fly to Rome florence and the weather there could be ok, pleasant. Or would you cope with something colder?0
