I'm going to stick up for the OP to some extent.
Yes, speeding is speeding. Everyone risks it at some point. Hopefully, like the OP, only when they feel it is safe to do so. And, yes, if you get caught then you pay the penalty.
If we are to believe the OP (and he is a respected poster elsewhere on these boards, so no reason to disbelieve him) then he was slowing down to the speed limit at the time. He was only speeding for a short stretch of road.
I bet that it is a small stretch of road where many people speed for precisely the same reason as the OP. I also bet that it is a small stretch of road that doesn't have a high proportion of accidents because people are speeding.
If there is a high proportion of accidents along the road a bit where it is built up then I would fully support them putting a camera in there. But to put a camera where they have sounds to me like they are doing it to catch people out rather than to cut down on accidents.
It strikes me as the equivalent of a parking warden catching someone who spent 4 hours and 3 minutes in a parking space when they'd only paid for 4 hours. Yes, you've overstayed your time but it is still harsh.0 -
Alternatively, to keep the anarchists happy, go onto pistoheads and ask how to get off speeding fines.
A guy was recently boasting about only getting a fine for doing 126mph on the A46. Most people felt that was excessive, but some, like Johno100 on here, were cheering him on for beating the system.
And you'll be able to link to those posts of mine on Pistonheads?
It is a shame that all sub-forums on here are not like the debt forums that are headed with an announcement 'for support and help not judgement'0 -
Im not after sympathy at all. Then to cap it all come on a forum seeking sympathy and help to avoid the penalty when I'm caught out.
The camera van has actually done what it set out to do - raise awareness that speed limits are to be respected.
In an ideal world im after a way to stick 2 fingers up at the camera for being sneaky.
I also dont agree going 126mph ANYWHERE on a public road is big/clever or right. If i was going 126mph i wouldnt have even made the post, i think there is just a slight difference between 4-6 mph over the limit and 56mph over the limit.
Jimmythewig - I think you have probably made a post and worded it far better than i have! That is pretty much my point.
I suppose moaning on a forum wont change anything, what will be will be. I meant seeking comments/advice from folks sympathetic to your problem.
As for 126mph on any public road - I expect you mean the in the UK where we have unrealistic speed limits.
Nevertheless I obey them - even the silly seventy one.
I'll be going a lot faster next week - legally - in a country where the locals obey the speed limits much more than here.
Speed where appropriate.
And I don't like speed cameras in the UK any more than you do. Especially where they pretend to be 'safety' cameras.
I agree it's a money-raising trick.
What I don't like is your seeking support and/or approval for being so unfortunate (or silly - you choose which) for being caught.
You need to accept it and move on. I would - and just shut up about it.
You might not even get a ticket anyway - that's going to be the laugh.0 -
Rule of thumb used to be Speed limit +10% +2 before ticket issued making it 46 MPH in your case. Fingers crossed you are OK. Let us know if you hear anything by post!0

Im not saying anyone on here is harsh. I knew there would be people who would say do the crime do the time (so to speak).
My issue is that to sit waiting at the spot the speed limit drops especially when its the end of the motorway its a little sneaky.
They are probably sitting there because many people break the speed limit there. And the aim is to put people off speeding there in the future. If it has stopped you doing just that, then it has worked. If you could actually see the road, the motorway hasnt really finished as such, they have just imposed the 40mph limit sooner rather than later.
Hey ho, i suppose im partly annoyed at myself for something which was easily avoidable but annoyed at them waiting in a place that was right on the cross over in a place its not going to make a difference whether it was 40 or 50mph... and again yes thats my opinion but there are no houses/shops/buildings in a distance that would take me a good 5 minutes to walk to.
If you look at it the other way around you will see that the 40 limit probably starts earlier because too many people do exactly what you did. So they want to slow people down long before they reach a built up area.0 -
The camera van has actually done what it set out to do - [STRIKE]raise awareness that speed limits are to be respected[/STRIKE] scam a few motorists for £60, and provide employment for retired ex-coppers, including the one whose company import the LTi 20:20 Laser devices from the US, where many States have banned them due to their questionable accuracy.
But, the UK Home Office classes them as "type approved", so that's all right then.
If that £60 fine puts people off speeding again, then it has done it's job.
Do you seriously thing that speed limits only exist to make money?? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Nobody is saying they only exist to make money.
If they are hoping to raise awareness why are they pulled right over, hid/parked behind a wall in a dark van?
If their intent is to raise awareness why not make it clear that they are parked there, otherwise i could speed down there for the next week until i get a ticket... especially with the weekend coming up, more chance of those kids walking for 5-10 minutes crossing a motorway exit road and then down that dual carriageway.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Because otherwise people would see them from miles away, and would break the speed limit when they aren't there. If people don't know if they are there or not, then they will obey the speed limit all the time. I bet you will now.0
