I don't think that MIL can get fit note and SSP for looking after her husband, she isn't the one who's ill.

I was thinking more of on the grounds of stress and anxiety, i know GP's do give them to patients under these conditions...worth a try.

Surprised your mum's GP did'nt make contact for her, all GP's i have worked with used to do it personally and surgery staff used to always makesure patients where aware of services avialable to them.

I'm afraid I think that's very wrong and an abuse of the system.

The wife will surely be suffering stress due to the news...i was'nt suggesting she goes in a lies.

I'm not very good at explaining myself after 10pm as i have a morphine fuddled brain.

Thank you very much indeed to each and every reply.

I spent 17 minutes on hold calling about Carers Allowance today but it was worth every minute (of hideous music!)because the last who answered was very knowledgeable and explained lots of things to me in a really sensitive way.

They will be applying for PIP, which used to be DLA, which will be pushed through quicker due to the circumstances, then Carers Allowance. Once those are in place I will look into the other things.

They have an appointment with Macmillan next week.

Thanks again for the time people have taken to reply. It has made a difficult time a little easier.

Just a note to save some pennies, if you need to ring anyone on an 0845/0870 etc. numbers, have a look at a site called Saynoto0870 you can mostly get a landline or Freephone number.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I wasn't sugggesting you were being personally dishonest, I just don't approve of the tactic in general.:)

Apply for PIP and you will also need a DS1500 form from your GP this will fast track any money.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

When my husband was diagnosed with cancer shortly after having a heart attack the GP suggested to me that he sign me off sick for a few weeks. I was working full time and at the time our children were very young. I said I wasn't in need of time off work and it was an abuse of the system - my GP said that I was under an enormous amount of stress even if I couldn't see it.

Use of a fit note in this tragic case is absolutely appropriate.

Good luck to the OP's in-laws.

Dunroamin.....Im just curious as to whether or not you have ever had a very close relative suffer with TERMINAL cancer?

Please note that I am referring to TERMINAL cancer only.

If you have not then you have no idea of the STRESS and anxiety it puts on the entire family!

I have lost my Mother this year to cancer and in the months leading up to her passing I can honestly , hand on heart say that it was the most traumatic time of my life!

Every morning , on waking (thats if you actually manage to get some sleep) , that awful feeling of sickness , dread , panic , isolation and every other emotion you can imagine begins to fill your head.

In my own situation , I was down and weepy on a daily basis , some days it was all I could do to drag myself out of bed in the morning! I couldnt bare another day of watching my Gorgeous Mum suffer terribly from this awful disease!

There were days I went to work and broke down in tears at the drop of a hat! There were other days I couldnt even face going into work at all. There were days I went in only to be sent home again....

Thank God for such an understanding employer.

The point I am making is this: I am sure the lady in question is also feeling all of these emotions. She is facing the prospect of losing her partner of many many years. If it isnt effecting her then I would be very surprised.

If this Lady visits her GP and explains how she is feeling then I am confident that she would be classed as unfit for work , in which case she WOULD be entitled to SSP from her Employer. Something which in my own opinion she would be very much entitled to!

Sometimes your posts can come across as showing you to be a little hard hearted , which is why I asked have you ever watched a loved one go through terminal cancer?

OP, if it helps any , my Father had a nurse come out to his home to help complete the DLA forms for my Mother.

If I remember correctly the forms were posted off on a Tuesday and by the following Tuesday the first payment of DLA had reached my Mothers bank account.

Just to give you a rough idea of how long it is likely to take x
