BT Vs Sky

I have Sky and I was thinking of BT Vision. However, there are some issues that everyone must consider.
1. If your BT Home Hub is not next to your TV you have to move it or use power line adaptors over your mains circuit. However, they only work if your Home Hub and TV are on the same house circuit. If not, tough.
2. There is no trial period (there is a nominal 10 day cool off period but no official trial period).
3. BT does not provide channel listings like Sky so you lose all your Sky channels (apart from freeview which I don't tend to watch over Skys listings anyway). BT provide a 'big tank' of stuff that they decide upon; This means that you are entirely at the whim of BT as to what you get. You can never be sure unlike channel listings which are more consistent.
4. Due to the big tank policy, series link is obsolete although if you do happen to find something you like, the whole series will normally be available.
5. To get an engineer to check that BT Vision will work is £45 and there is a £30 connection fee. So, the 10 day period costs you £75.
6. There is no multi room option available either.

From my perspective it’s not compelling enough to try let alone sign up for 12 months and I did question BT about this but they were not to be pushed to provide a trial period.

Although I think Sky are very very expensive, BT will not attract many Sky customers if they cannot try the service first. Think again BT!!!!!!

Try this, I like sky and wanted to keep it, my sky package is multiroom and costs me £32 a month. Told them I wanted to cancel due to budget, etc. They offered a deal. Next month will cost me £10, then the next 6 months it is £26 a month, then will revert to £32 unless I renegotiate.

Called BT today and said I was going to sky, previous BT package cost me 24.99 a month for unlimited internet (option 3) then with evening and weekend calls ended up costing £49 a month. But TA DA, I now have unlimited internet and anytime calls for £26 a month, so saving £23 a month and now can call when I like.
My friend has sky broadband and is always been charged more each month as says its easy to go over the download allowance.

I know if I had combined TV I can make cheaper still so may consider BT vision.

I still dont get this BTVision.. you only get to watch Freeview channels, right? you can't watch Sky1 or Living Tv or any of those channels, right? so what's the point?
I know you can watch some sport channels but you have to pay extras

Help! I am also in this situation and it is costing me a fortune! bt bill is usually £40 a month and sky costs me about £55-£60! I suppose I would like to keep sky as BT don't have Living TV and I would watch it, but I could easily live without it if it saves me some money. Really need help with this as I can't afford it on part time hours anymore :mad:

i have been looking into this problem of sky v bt and i have come to the conclusion that if you have sky + or sky Hd + you can record loads of programs and with all the channels to watch and record that is more than plenty for anyone. i would also like to say that all the people complaining about line speed...dont, living in the part of scotland i do i and only get about 1mb sometimes less. i pay Sky £45 a month for Sky( i dont pay for HD as i dont see the point) Broadband, and line rental (free anytime calls). also if you phone sky they will in my experience (have phoned them on behalf of my father) always give you a reduction if you haggle enough provided you agree package deal same day.

I had sky for years (Multiroom), £68 a month for everything, always felt it was overpriced, lots of repeats and 90% of stuff I could watch on freeview... but the sky movies were good.

but I moved home and decided to get BT Vision in. What a mistake!!! Firstly BT vision uses your Broadband line, and everything other than the free view channels down loads over the internet. Although BT Vision usage is not counted in the billing usage, it does hog the broadband and even worse when downloading HD files.. BT also restrict Broadband.
Sky on the other hand uses the satellite for everything other than Anytime+.

I actually bought a second BT vision box for the bedroom, which was a total disaster as both boxes had to be plugged into the same router and all sorts of problems occurred with recording switching from one box to another, even worse broadband problems, so after a a couple of weeks of supports calls BT said they dont support 2 boxes.

Then came the first bill, 2 pages of extras, a dozen films or so, bit of music, bit of football, £115 - yes £115. so £115 for entertainment that was included in the sky package, couple of days on the BT support line, loads of internet problems.

After about 3 months I summarily cancelled the contract and to BT's credit they did refund everything. I had great pleasure in burning both BT Vision boxes and remote controls in the back garden. Pointless and silly I know!

I have also cancelled the BT broadband in favour of Sky Broadband, now have 8Mb instead of 4Mb and its all worked without fail, Sky talk, sky any time etc!

BT - 1 out of 10 (they get 1 for the refund)
Sky - 10 out of 10

There is no doubt that Sky TV is so much better than BT Vision!

BT or Sky Broadband can be problematic if you live far away from the exchange or on old exchanges or have wiring problems at home! But Sky broadband is better as they do not restrict service and you can watch TV without it messing up stuff you are doing on the computer!

I too went for BT Vision (offered when I was complaining about another poor aspect of BT) & I stated that I don't get freeview in my area. I'm not technical, all I wanted was the same as sky at a cheaper price (recently lost job & looking to make savings). Apparently I agreed to this service (on demand) & they are charging me over £300 for a service I could NEVER have used. Been a BT customer for > 30 years & now left without tv and with a massive bill I don't have any idea how I'm going to pay. BEWARE BT - can only extort money, not obtain by being a service provider.

BT vision is just Freeview, with some VOD content over the net.


You have to pay for BT Vision

Freeview is free.

If you want some VOD, buy an internet enabled STB/TV/bluray player/Wii etc and use the iPlayer.
