I check fuel prices whenever I get to around half a tank, then if I'm passing the cheapest station when I'm out and about I'll tank up. I certainly wouldn't let my fuel run down to the extent that a warning light comes on....was drummed into me as a learner 17yr old and then as a van driver on holiday cover whilst home from Uni, NEVER to let the fuel get so low that the light comes on.

The weight of a full tank compared to a half tank will theoretically have an impact on consumption, but will be so miniscule as to be negligible in practice. As someone else said, remove unwanted rubbish from the car, keep windows closed, don't use high-drain electrical equipment unnecessarily, keep tyres at the correct pressure, drive in an economical style ... all these things will have a far bigger impact.

The only money-saving tip for buying fuel is don't wait until you're on reserve - you're then faced with having to fill up at the next garage you pass, rather than being able to wait until you pass a cheaper one.

Gawd - I hate putting fuel in my car. I wish it would run on air :D

Seriously though, I usually run it until the light comes on and the fill up to the brim at the cheapest & nearest station (possibly with a supermarket voucher).

My Dad always reprimands me for running the car on "fumes" - he says that any debris from the bottom of the petrol tank could be sucked up!

Maybe he's right but I still usually have a vacuum / suction noise when I take off the petrol cap!

Have a look at this site
