I fill up my motorcycle to the top everytime.

I hate having to stop off at the petrol station so try and minimise having to fill my tank.

Both our cars are filled to the brim (but not the neck) once a week.

I've got a 70l tank, OH has a 60l tank, and they're almost empty on Monday morning.

  • I normally put in about half a tank a week. It probably saves money by reducing the weight of the car, but I doubt its enough money to notice. Fluctuations in petrol price will make a bigger difference.

Probably also a good idea not to use the car for short journeys and walk instead if you want to be economical, I believe cars work most efficiently when they warm up.

I put 5 litres in the car twice a week whilst at the supermarket doing normal shopping. I put in whole litres as the reward scheme at this supermarket only gives reward points based on litres sold rather than whole pounds.

    They do.
my MPG on a short journey is about 5 less than on a long journey of equal speed etc.
SHort = less than 20-30 mins on a dual carriage way
long = 30+ minutes on a dual carriage way.

A Ltr of fuel weighs about 1 Kilo, a full tank about the weight of a large child.

You might be better off looking to see if you are carrying things in the car you do not need.

When I have reason to empty my car I am surprised at how much is there that I do not need to carry with me.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Always fill up first thing in the morning when its colder, as the petrol will be denser and you get more!!

It all depends if you have to go out of your way to fill up. If you pass the petrol station anyway then you will save money by filling up you tank a number of times rather than filling it all the way up. If you have to travel extra to the petrol station then that would negate any savings.
The down side is the wasted time, this is where you have to decide which is more important, the extra time or money.

For every degree cooler you get 0.1% more petrol....

So about 25 millilitres more petrol each week based the ground temperature in mornings being 5 degrees cooler than the afternoon...based on 25 litres per week. Savings at 132.9p/litre would be 3p per week.

However, many pumps have temperature compensation built in and it makes no difference at all.

And....petrol is stored in large tanks under the ground...it's unlikely the temperature of the ground will change much from morning to evening.
