I have a share certificate. I'm in no rush but need to decide where to save it. I note many people are trading through x-o and Hargreaves Lansdown but I may open a stocks and shares account with my bank , First Direct. No one appears to mention doing this?

From there I can trade if I want or put in a stocks and shares ISA as i'm a 40% tax payer but realise you have to hit over £10000 before you get hit with capital gains tax.

A bit of advice on where to send my share certificate would be appreciated as this is the first time I have purchased shares and I may continue when I learn more. I'm intending to be in this for the long run.

You open a share dealing account with First Direct as you bank with them which may not be the cheapest but is certainly the most convenient.

    http://www1.firstdirect.com/1/2/sharedealing/sharedealing-services

Once the account is open you send the share cert., plus a "crest transfer form" and whatever other transfer form FD tells you.
All the info should be in the link above.

Grr. X-O have told me they can't complete the registration without sending in a load of proof of ID for some reason.

Can anyone recommend a similarly cheap service, I just want to sell these asap.

    SVS Securities?

I've been with them for a couple of years. £5.75 per trade (buy or sell), you can deposit certificates with them without charge. No monthly or inactivity fees.

Never had a problem with them. I can't remember how quickly my account was opened though or what documents (if any) I had to send to them.
  • Did anyone get there cheque this morning?

Sold on Tuesday morning via Shareview website and still not got anything despite my invoice suggesting I should have it by now.

Exactly the same abathingape, post man has come and gone this morning without my cheque. No way was it posted out last Thursday.

Called them, apparently they were only sent out TODAY as there has been a "delay". He stated that there was 10's of thousands of cheques going out to which I replied "that's 10's of millions of pounds gaining interest".

Will be phoning back this afternoon to have my commission returned as frankly this is not good enough.

I'm still waiting too, I agree its not acceptable. It seems they got the cheques out to people who'd used the automated phone service within a reasonable timescale, why then the delay for people who had paid more to use the website service?! When the settlement date was last Friday (for Tuesday sales) why are cheques only being posted today?
  • At what stage did X-O tell you this Pat?

Was it after you had opened an account and sent your certificates to them, or while opening the account?

Hoping that a lot of us do not get caught out because of this.

Really am a novice at this...do you just sign up with them in order to trade or do you have to send your share certificate...?

I sold at £4.87, as it looked as if the prices might be going down. Profit of 346.52, which is good enough for me.

A big thanks to the people on the latter part of this tread who were particularity helpful. Thank you.

So far x-o have been very straightforward for me.

    Opened the account last Wednesday,
got pin in post on Friday
    posted the cert on Friday
Cert arrived with them Yesterday (Monday)
    Traded first thing today

Just not sure if I need to wait until settlement to request payment.
