Up to now isn't it only BG that's using the new meters, so if you don't like the idea of being monitored all you have to do is switch supplier. The new meter will be treated as a standard one then.

Thanks Norman Castle. I am commenting here on my personal choices -not the companies. I was a tester for smart meters going from credit to prepayment and back to credit which is also why I support them.

I can tell the weather is getting colder as a couple of weeks ago I had used £8 of gas in the last month and today it shows £20. Much better than waiting on a 3 month bill to get a surprise. I am not happy with the £20 so will go and change the settings on my timer today.

It it really was about helping customers understand their usage then they would still supply clip on owl devices that cost 30 each and can be installed in mins and give all the same information as a smart meter.

    But it isn't.

Um, they do....for free. Just sign up to energy smart if your with bg.

So instead of offering him any help, we simply label him stupid, and move on.

    How enlightened you are.

You do know we are talking about an anecdotal story about someone, ie - not someone posting here. im good but giving advice to someone mentioned in a story is beyond me.

This is someone that didn't check their meter for 3 years and ended up with a huge bill, not exactly a genius.

Was told they are phasing them out for smart meters.

You seam to be implying that the general public are not smart enough to know the more energy they use the higher their bills. Do they actually have to be told the more you use your heating the higher your gas bill will be?

If your meters are in a difficult place to read they can be moved sometimes for free.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I was confused after going outside and considering wearing a coat.
  • I work for BG reading smarts. We do a safety check once a year at the moment ( people still bypass them ) but I have had very reliable information that its dropping to once every 5 years or longer in the future. The main thing is that its and end to estimated readings. We only read a proportion of meters anyway throughout the year. we try and get 67% of our allocation but this can drop to below 20% in certain areas

My smart meter has a GPRS modem so I don't need a reader, my consumption is forwarded daily, split into usage time bands. The need for a physical read is reduced as a result.
