  • Well this is how water meters work. Our meters have always been inside our house and no-one from the water company has ever come to read one, and the bills are actual usage not estimated. I wish our gas and electricity meters were like this because it's a pain having to remember to take a reading once a month.

I really don't see your problem.

I'm all about choice and not being ripped off.

Smart meters will cost the end users (you and me) 11bn to roll out, and will save the (private and many foreign owned) energy companies 300m a year according to ofgem.

Agreed. But I'm still not sure why you think people against smart meters are the general public? It seams to be the more educated that are cautious with them. The general public are wowed by the adverts on the telly between xfactor telling you about this amazing new device that will allow you to turn on your shower via text message...
Ok, I agree that it wasnt the best choice of words but at the same time, saying that they are all a 'con' could be construed as scaremongering.

I still stand by the word con. The end users are paying for the suppliers to make more money, that's a con.

People that don't check their estimates regularly against actual usage are pretty stupid
Lol. People in glass houses. ;):D

I don't see whats wrong with the companies collecting the money for what has actually been used rather than underestimating what has actually been used for years.

If you were in their shoes, would you not want to do the same?

But they will be charging people for making their job easier and saving them money.

If I wasn't on the phone I would have the brain power to think of an analogy.

PollySouthend, you seem to like throwing around names. In this thread alone you have more or less stated that anybody who doesn't agree with you is 'Stupid'.
It seams to be the more educated that are cautious with them.
So anybody that doesn't see smart meters as a threat, is uneducated. Good start.
The general public are wowed by the adverts on the telly between xfactor telling you about this amazing new device that will allow you to turn on your shower via text message...
Which seems to include the entire general public minus the small, elite, educated group fronted by PollySouthend.

    So what else is new?
If I wasn't on the phone I would have the brain power to think of an analogy.
Yet another reference to you immeasurable intellect? :D

The 'safety' inspection every two years still applies. But they will certainly save on the other 7 meter reading vists they won't now have to make in that period.

It's supposed to be every 3 months ?
Lucky if I get one every 9 months. Has been a bit over a year between some.
