We never charged our eldest a penny when she lived here...
She had the pleasure of moving out and in together with her boyfriend....

I remember the look of horror on their faces when i told them how much things such as utility's and food cost each month and the tens of other things like tv license she had never thought about....The joy of growing up...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

How much better if her upbringing had included an understanding of these things which would enable her to make informed choices about her life and future!

It did, But until like many others these days the reality hits home, they fail to understand the subtle education they have been receiving all these years..
I hope you do not tell your kids when a pint of milk goes up because in this house we just pay the bills and do not worry about cost.
I undestand we are lucky but if you asked me or the wife what our outgoings are we both would not have a clue or really care..

Agreed. None of this is a surprise, you know when they are born that child benefit/ tax credits stop at the latest when they reach 18/19 if not sooner.

You do. But it still comes as a surprise when said child decides to drop out at 17 and your household income is reduced by £200 a month.

When it happens overnight......there's not much immediate room to make adjustments.

Our son did the same. Decided mid May he wanted to leave school, and was working by 10 June.

We had less than a month to prepare.
We knew all along that Child TC and CB would stop, but we believed it would be September 2014, when the twins part ceased. And we was working our finances towards this goal when DS2 pulled the rug out from under our feet  Plus we lost a lot more than £200 a mth if you include housing benefit :(

But hey ho it's character building!!!!!!

Surely you should have been happier that your son was productive and therefore not reliant on benefits?

But, as he's working, the money he pays as keep will surely go towards covering the loss, plus you won't still be buying clothes, paying for school meals/trips and pocket money?

Isn't that what this whole discussion's about?

No mention of anything other than 'oh no we're not getting as much in benefits anymore' though.

Am VERY proud of my son for not only not being on benefits, but by looking at my poor example, taking note and NOT following it.

Due to OH v low wages our benefit was quite substantial. And w/o taking a HUGE chunk of his wages, he doesn't' cover the loss. But we've adjusted things accordingly.
And I only commented in response to the poster I quoted.

see my first reply!! Am very proud of all my children and I was replying to the poster who said it wasn't always possible to plan for loss of benefits. Poster had said it was shock and hard to adjust to sudden loss of benefits, I was just agreeing that's all.
