tim_n wrote:I remember my mum serving me up wheatabix as a kid. I'd not had any for years so this packet was well out of date! I was sitting there mindlessly eating it when I looked down and noticed movement. Closer examination saw hundreds of the little blighters crawling about in and around it (me having already consumed a whole biscuit). What amused me (after the horror passed) was the way they were building a colony - they'd used bits of wheatabix as doors to the tunnels and the flaps would occasionally spring up as one of these little insects would go off on some kind of mission.
I'm fairly sure I didn't dream it and I was put off wheatabix for about ten years. Eat it every morning now.
Would this be a more proteined version of the wheatabix cake I wonder???

I have heard that some people freeze their flour and similar items when they get them home - the little bugs may well come from the store in your food. Freezing things like that will kill them. Or at least retard their propogation. While the BIG packs of flour may be more economical, perhaps buying several small ones and keeping them in the freezer until it's time to open another will help.:beer:0

Ooo...Yuck!! I am new to the OS board and this is the first full thread I read! Ive gone all itchy and had better go and check the flour in me cubbie. Good luck to all _ i wonder if it is because it has been a warm summer (up till August - of course!!) xxIf you don't have something nice to say don't bother saying anything at all.0

I found flour beetles in my plain flour the other day. Blurgh! None of my neighbours had any so the flour for my bechemel sauce was just sifted a few times. [[STRIKE]cheapskate[/STRIKE] MSE icon]

How many calories in a weevil?
Hi! Only just found this thread! I used to work for a local council and this was very common. dont worry about it. Once they have been cooked in bread or whatever they wont hurst you! Even if you keep a sealed unopned packet of flour for long enough you will see them as they infiltrate into the glue on the packets and everything. general purpose crawling inscet spray will do it once you have got rid of all infected stuff- or cooked it ha ha ah!0 -
I've found some flour beetles this week too. Little blighters!

Ah, that explains the little critter I found in my cupboard this morning. Flour beetles. Please excuse me while I pull on the marigolds and splash some hot bleach around.

They're not meal worm larvae by any chance? We had them coming from some dried noodles not so long ago and so had to empty out all the cupboards, spray them down with bug killer (sorry environment) and touch wood we seem to have been ok since. I'm still not keeping stocks of flour or pasta in though just in case we get another outbreak, and I've certainly not had any cereal in the house since!!Debt Free Nerd No. 89, LBM: April 2006, Debt at highest (Sept 05): £40,939.96

I just had to go and check my flour after reading this thread. I can't see anything in there, does that mean I have none, or would I not see them? No signs of anything in my cupboard either, but now I am worried that they are that small that I just can't see them...help!0
