These critters lurk in the cracks between the panels that make up kitchen units, so starving them for a while by storing any new stuff in a different place, and repeated cleaning may be necessary. Infestations tend to manifest themselves in the summer because hot weather causes any viable eggs present to hatch. Nobody should feel "dirty" because of these - they can and will happen to anyone if the conditions are right. Just remember how hot and humid it has been recently, with little or no respite even at night.

well if it's any comfort at all if they did get into any actual food they certainly wouldn't do you much harm. There is a restaurant in London I've been to that serves insects on the menu (very nice food there by the way contrary to what this might make you think), but by the sound of it no one on this thread will want to visit it for a meal any time soon!!!!! It's called archipelago and here's some reviews of it if anyone thinks I'm making it up:

so now you know what to do with your weevils - put 'em in a jar and sell 'em to archipelago!!
(that last bit was a joke - they don't serve weevils.....) :D

Yes, possibly, but it's a long shot - the stuff they infest (flour, pasta, grains etc) you are unlikely to be scarfing down uncooked, so any little bugs will die with the big ones when cooked.

I remember my mum serving me up wheatabix as a kid. I'd not had any for years so this packet was well out of date! I was sitting there mindlessly eating it when I looked down and noticed movement. Closer examination saw hundreds of the little blighters crawling about in and around it (me having already consumed a whole biscuit). What amused me (after the horror passed) was the way they were building a colony - they'd used bits of wheatabix as doors to the tunnels and the flaps would occasionally spring up as one of these little insects would go off on some kind of mission.

I'm fairly sure I didn't dream it and I was put off wheatabix for about ten years. Eat it every morning now.

Would this be a more proteined version of the wheatabix cake I wonder???

  • Back in the 1970's we did cookery for real in school and had weevils in the flour, the teacher said not to worry and just cook the four (for bread or whatever) and eat it as it does no harm!!!! So we did!
