Simply Be

Right I attempted to open a Simply Be account last week. It went through, I placed an order for £123 and was initially given £125 credit limit. I was quite pleased since the JD Williams Brand is something I buy a lot of.

Now this new order was processed with 10% discount, and I waited. When I checked online after 4 days to see why it was not despatched, I found the order was cancelled and the £125 credit limit revoked! Of course they did not bother to inform me of there decision.

I have a JD Williams account, which is used solely on a 'Pay As You Go' basis, this account is now around 3 years old and I purchase a lot from this company.

Question... I was bankrupt in 2010, and JD Williams was an account included in my initially bankruptcy, they let me open a new account after the bankruptcy which as I said I pay upfront as I order.

Do you think they 'Declined' the account because of my previous past history with them, i.e. are they holding my past financial connection with them against me?

I am pretty peeved, and asked customer services for an explanation.

My credit file is fine, everything as it should be, and I have credit elsewhere with no defaults.

    Thanks for that! :)
  • I'm no expert but I'd bet my mortgage on it being to do with the fact that your previous account with them was included in the bankruptcy.

The fact that they let you have a 'pay as you go account' means nothing really because there is no risk for them. Similar to a payg mobile phone, I suppose.

I don't mean to sound harsh but if you were them and someone had an account with you that they 'got out of paying' (I am not saying it was intentional or anything or that you are to 'blame' - just that is fact and how they would see it) - would you risk lending to them again?
  • I was discharged from bankruptcy in June this year and I have recently opened a Simply Be account. I have had 2 credit limit increases and its currently at £600..but I'm very careful with credit now!! I didnt have an account with them pre bankruptcy and i have been able to open an account so the problem you are having must be because you owed them money before you went bankrupt.
  • Your credit file isn't fine. It's got a big black mark of bankruptcy on it.

Considering you only went bankrupt 3 years ago, so discharged only 2 years. You've got existing credit elsewhere....

Final checks may have spawned a decline. That's a recent bankruptcy so they maybe very wary if you've got other credit lines,

There is also the fact you owed them and that will be recorded for 6 years from default/bankruptcy.

So yes they may not give you credit based on that.

In fact, it can go on for a lot longer than that if dealing with one company.

I had an employee (discharged 8 years ago) sign the forms for an Amex card, and this came back negative as Amex (I believe) were included in the bankruptcy for an account that defaulted at least 12 years ago.

  • Simply Be are a horrible company. I do have a good credit file and had an account with them. The amount of times I would place an order, hear nothing, and check my account to find the order revoked was ridiculous and there was never an explanation for their actions.

I closed my account and refuse to give them my business.

    Yeah fair point! ;)

Yes they are good at increasing limits, that was how I managed to get into debt in the first place with them, increase after increase every month - I was also unwell at the time...

To be completely honest I don't even need a credit account with them, I only wanted one because I am aware they often send discount codes very frequently which I can't get on a PAYG account!

I am aware it 'will not be perfect' with history of the bankruptcy but I have cleaned up the file etc. I now have a history of good credit payments on there from a mobile phone contract - over 12 months of history and a Credit Union Loan!

I don't even need the account, I was hoping to secure one to help build up my credit rating further and to grab the discount codes they always give out!
