Thanks for all your replies. The general consensus seems to be ignore and this behaviour will pass. I'll let you know how it progresses!
Give it a good try, but ... I had one where what worked better was NOT ignoring but saying clearly and loudly at an early stage that this behaviour wasn't acceptable, and he was to stop, now.

I also used to whisper, sing and even blow in their faces, if they asked me to stop I'd say that I'd stop when they did ...

im joking - no i really am not advocating beating your child

i have always found one of three ways worked with mine - 'stop now' said firmly, ignoring them, or throwing yourself on the floor and having a tantrum they are so shocked they stop and see what we are doing then discuss it 'thats not nice is it' etc this especially works in public places after 2 tantrums in asda (1 per child) they never threw a tantrum again in there and my son hasnt thrown one in public since whereas my daughter does protesting very well she just sits there and ignores me i pick her up and off we go

or if they just wont stop pick them up and put them in their bedroom and ignore them get on with what ever you want to when they stop go in 'that was a silly noise wasnt it' 'that noise makes mummy sad and you dont get to have fun if you are making that noise'

I REALLY WAS JOKING ABOUT BEATING THE CHILD
The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 5
