High Street versus the Internet

Options
There is a very expensive shop where I live and I wanted to buy wallpaper and curtin fabric/ I sourced a lot of samples but the lady in the shop was also very helpful
when I was making a choice having 2 fabrics which were discontinued we found a 3rd fabric and she ordered a sample for me.
Told price £35M when I checked on line I could buy it for £21.06M
Checked with the company who produce it and their price was £27m
when I found this I had a large amount of money still on the credit card at the high st store.
I was to send measurements by email etc
I did feel bad but I said in the email the prices I found on the internet Had a call asking whether I had ordered it but was waiting on her getting back to me.
Later that day call to say they would do the 2 fabrics at the internet
s also some wallpaper. I did take the advice from these forums and went back to them. It might not be haggling but whatever I am delighed with the outcome. I am sure that they are still making a profit.
Thanks again for the ML forums

  • £35 million pounds is possibly the most expensive wallpaper and curtains I've ever heard of.

When I saw this post I had to look a couple of times. I thought you were posting a cost of £35 million for your fabrics - that would indeed be an expensive shop

It took me a minute or two to realise it was per metre!

What a dimwit - you can tell I would be better off in the £ shop!

Great that you got what you wanted at an acceptable price and have supported a local high street store.
  • Just bought a Neff cooker from a local shop, they matched the online prices. I would have gone to them if they had been a few pounds dearer as we are all to blame if all the shops go and we are left with a batch of electrons.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

Sorry about the £35 per metre mix up. I am quite embarrased about asking on the high street for things.
I did not think for one minute that they would price match as they have a very high profile and again many people say they are too expensive.
I printed off the fabrics and wallpaper with the prices and where I could buy then. The very nice lady said that her boss gave her the go ahead to match prices. I told her that I had appreciated what she had done for me. She said she appreciated my honesty and that she was happy to do her best for me.
Saved a lot of money so I am happy. They already have my money as I paid for fabric that was £79 meter so I would have to get them to refund this to me.
I telephoned the company on the Internet to let them know Brindleys had matched the price., I did this as a matter of courtesy and they appreciated Now it will be all go as everything is falling apart her new Freezer new Printer new Vacumm cleaner. New taps for a sink electrician to sort out my my immerser.
Talk about trouble coming at the same time; I am tired trying to search for the best prices but worth it in that I have got a best price on everything!!! Today I need a rest!!!
Sorry again for the mix up it made me laugh!

  • In relation to High Street v Internet, for some purchases l use the high street just to take a physical look and feel of the product and then make the purchase via the Internet. The main reason for this is due to the Distance Selling Regulations (DSR) protection you get when buying on line, there are some retailers who make you jump through hoops, and try to avoid their responsibility when things go wrong.

The other reasons are sometimes because l can find it cheaper or go via cash back sites.

I'm fully aware l am not supporting the high street in doing this, and in response to this l say that the negative retailers have put me off.
  • I never understood what was so great about the high street. I like shopping centres and the Internet. I don't have to walk through chavs to make a purchase in a shopping centre or on the Internet!

I'm sure everyone mourned the loss of horses and carriages back in the day.

Yes I do buy on the internet including groceries from Sainsbury's and top up from M&S.My online purchases are because I am elderly don't drive and have back problems. Price and service is also important.
I took delivery of a new freezer today. I bought from Appliance Direct. Their price was best but the main reason is that 2 men would deliver and I live in an Apartment but with a lift directly into the apartment. They would also take off the wrapping for inspection and they took away the wrapping. The freezer was delivered as promised so only can say good things about them
I did say to the shop selling the fab more expensive I did say that I had to let my head rule my heart. At £13 per metre and the other £9.50 Wallpaper £10 less saved a lot of money. The positive point being that I still have a good relationship with the Shop. Were I to creat a great fuss it might have meant I might have felt unable to go into the store again. I did not ask them to price match just gave them the info. They say that as a customer they want to their best for me. I suppose I used the ML suggested method and I will be able to use the savings for further plans I have now decided need doing.
