I read this thread with interest as I came online to ask the same. My OH is 40 in November, I was looking to get him and xbox or PS3 for this, we are not really gamers. My OH had an xbox before I met him but rarely uses it, he has spoken of us getting a new one as we have just knocked our kitchen and living room through, moved the sofas into the fron room and plan to have the TV on the wall, so he wants to get a console to use on the TV.
He has said he wants an xbox 360, what is the new one that is coming out that has been mentioned? We have a 5 year old who I guess will want to play when he sees daddy playing, then in turn our 1 year old daughter will also want too. What games are available for the younger ones? I doubt it will be used to play online. Am I just better waiting for the newer consoiles or will our limited use not warrant and brand new all singing and dancing one?
Thanks guys (and gals)0 -
Hi folks, Sorry for double posting but hadn't realised there was a Gaming Board so had posted this on the Techie Board
Background. I'm by no means a big gamer but obviously want to make an informed choice as it's quite a bit of money to spend.. I'm pretty computer literate, work with them all day, 5 days a week but I have absolutely NO experience of any of the games consoles out there at present apart from the Wii and even then it's minimal.
Basically I have a 6 year old (Nearly 7) and a 5 Year old who want Disney Infinity for their Wii but having read some reviews, it seems it is pants on the Wii Console due to limitations based on the consoles power. Obviously the PS4 is on the way but at £350 it's a bit steep. I can get a nearly new (6 months old) 500Gb PS3 for about £140 (Much more affordable) but know nothing about it. Obviously you read the reviews/predictions about the PS4 and you get all the gumpf on how much faster and better picture quality and better this and that etc. etc. etc it'll be but really is it worth it for two young kids? I can't see the PS3 becoming defunct overnight so the question I suppose is, would you go for the PS3 at this stage? Is it a good console? I know it can play Blu-Rays and can be connected to the Internet etc..... has anyone got one and uses it for connecting to the net and using BBC I-Player or Netflicks or the likes and what is your views on it?
any info to help my decision would be great...0 -

The new Xbox console is the XboxOne.
All dependant on your usage really and if you dont want an all singing and dancing one then go for current gen, theres games for all ages on both consoles, have a look on game.co.uk and search for games for the relevant age ranges.0 -

They're both much of a muchness tbh (360 and ps3) you just have to weigh up what you need it for.Knowledge is a tool, and like all tools, its impact is in the hands of the user.0 -
I've had an Xbox360, PS3 and Wii pretty much since each one launched and have bought a stack of games relating to each console.
My opinions on the 3 consoles are as follows:
The Wii is a jazzed up Gamecube. I already had a Gamecube and regret wasting money on the Wii (although my wife insists that it's a fantastic console as she played Wii Sports on it for a while). It's currently unplugged gathering dust. My Gamecube gets more use these days than the Wii.
The Xbox360 is a good console, let down only by its reliability. I've had half a dozen of them fail on me since I bought the first one and it's really put me off. I bought the HD-DVD player when that was launched and thought it was good, then blu-ray won the war of the HD formats and the HD-DVD player was disconnected and is currently in its box in the loft along with the dozen or so films I bought for it. I've never been totally at ease with the controllers for the 360. They just don't quite fit in my hands as well as the PS3's... The Xbox360 is currently used mainly by my eldest son to play Minecraft on although I do go on it every once in a while. I'm expecting the most recent 360 replacement to fail sooner or later and go the way of all of it's predecessors (either to be replaced under warranty, or to go into a skip, as most of them failed out of warranty).
The PS3 is (in my opinion at least) the most solid of the 3 options. I've had one failure in the time I've owned it and that was replaced under warranty even though it was a month outside its warranty finishing. The games are just as good as the 360, but with the added benefit of having a blu-ray player it's the console that I use most (by a long way). It's currently the only console set up in my 'man crib' although I plan on replacing it with a PS4 when it comes out. The controllers are by far the best ergonomically speaking and I'm hoping the PS4 controllers will fit my hands just as well as the PS3's do. I've used Netflix etc on the PS3 and it worked perfectly fine (your internet connection speed is probably more important than the means by which you stream the content to be honest as I suspect that all the consoles are equally capable)0 -

IT has the "playstation move" controller at additional cost, but it's not a patch on the Xbox "kinect" system. KIds and casual gamers love that input method. I find it a bit gimmicky and prefer to sit on the sofa and play with a controller.
It also has wifi and hook up to your LAptop to act as a media extender, though I get better results playing media from USB stick.
For me, the PS3 hits the sweet spot of useful living room device. THink of it as a slightly more expensive blu-ray player that can play games and you won't go far wrong. If you have an HD tv and haven't seen a proper Blu-ray, the quality is outstanding and with well made films you do get a cinema experience in the living room.
My Xbox 360 now gathers dust in between sessions on Forza motorsport 4. I no longer pay the online subscription, and it's too loud to play DVD's (I understand the slim ones are better in this respect). It does integrate well as a media extender IF you hard wire it to your home network, or buy a wireless adaptor for it. The kinect system is IMO the XBox 360's strongest selling point for younger gamers.
The Xbox One Vs PS4 battle is one that is yet to be fought. Both will charge online subscriptions, both will play blu rays, THe Xbox one comes with a slightly scary kinect camera/microphone that will be integral to the operation of the console. Each have some exclusive games which the console makers are plugging hard to try and keep gamers tied to their brand. It remains to be seen which will "win out" and I think the smart money is on waiting a year or two and then taking advantage of second round price cuts. Reliability will also be an issue: Best let the hardware get shaken down and made reliable to avoid an Xbox 360 style failure rate. I've had 3 Xbox 360's.0 -
Playstation 3 all the way
PS3 is a BluRay player - 360 is not
PS3 online play is free - 360 is ~ £50 a year
PS3 can play when controller battery dead via cable - 360 can't
PS3 and 360 basically have the same games, unless you're a massive Halo fan, then the few PS3 exclusive titles are better than 360'sFaith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0
