Which is the best console?

Options
I'm thinking about buying dh a console for his birthday but to be honest we aren't massive gamers (but potentially could be lol).

At the moment we have a wii and have a bit of an obsession with the lego games but given that the new one will not be released on the wii it leaves us with a bit of a dilemma.

I was tempted by the WiiU (stick with what you know and all) but it doesn't seem to have a lot of games. So I was thinking Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 but which one is best? We will mainly rent games from lovefilm unless we love it and then will probably buy second hand so the price of the games don't really bother me too much.

Any advice?

You really dont want to start this kind of Thread. Fanboys & Flames ahead..

For reference I have both consoles..

For all intents and purposes they are 'much of a muchness'.. Specifications dont make too big a difference to the 'untrained eye'. Majority of Games are available on Both Systems.. So what kind of games do you want to play?

Talking current gen consoles (since you mention xbox 360 & ps3)..

If you might want to watch Blu Ray films go with the PS3 (Although Ive never watched a film on mine).

For Online Gaming - Xbox 360 costs money to play online (although the ps3 is free there is a paid option with other benefits). On the plus side Xbox has dedicated servers so is a more polished experience.. PS3 is free so has lots of kids on there playing - and this can spoil the 'ambience'...

So be prepared for whoever is likely to shout the loudest over what they prefer..
  • Neither is "best". I've had both and prefer the PS3. It costs me nothing to play online and I can watch Blu-Ray films.

PS3 and a PS+ subscription will get you access to loads of games included in the subscription. It's also a blu ray player and media center and you don't need to be a 'gold member' like you do on Xbox360 to get access to some of the media center apps
  • As above it depends what you want to use it for. The money saving option would be the PS3 if you want to play online as it is free to do so. On Xbox you must pay a subscription. And if you want to play Blu Rays again it is the better money saving option so you don't have to buy a separate player. (of course if you already have one or don't wish to play them then it doesn't matter)

As for which is "best" there is no right or wrong answer as it depend son game to game. Some games perform better on Xbox and some perform better on PS3.

If you will mostly be renting games then I would suggest to you that you get a PS3 and get PS+ instead. It is £40 for 1 year and each month they bring out free games to download.
    Here are this months:
    http://uk.playstation.com/playstationplus/#select-tab-gamecollection

As you can see some big names such as Uncharted 3, Assassins Creed 3, along with many more. (Next month Far Cry 3 is due to be released btw!)

Xbox have a similar service but they only offer 2 games per month. So I wouldn't say it is a s money saving an option in that respect.

I know I'm coming across biased towards PS3 and I am. But I'm stating facts here!

Also, I must mention exclusive games. Both consoles have their own exclusive games. For example Xbox has Halo and PS3 The Last Of Us.
Which games are better is personal opinion. However if you take the biggest selling exclusive games from both sides the average review scores JUST favour PS3.
Example: Uncharted 3 and The Last of Us got 10 out of 10 (PS3 exclusives) and Halo 4 got 9.8 out of 10 and Gears of War got 9.4 (Xbox360 exclusives) from IGN.

There is one department where Xbox 360 beats PS3 though. And I think it might be important to you. Motion sensors! The Xbox Kinect FAR surpasses the PS Move. (basically their versions of Wii motion sensor technology)
This could push it either way for you. If you're happy with using the Wii for this sort of thing then there's no point getting it for another console. But if it's something you do want to also explore on another console then it's better on an Xbox.

I hope I have helped! Like I said I do favour PS3 but I am only giving facts here.

I had not heard about that! Oh well there goes that idea. We don't play games enough to buy them.

Then PS+ is the best idea for you, like Bex said. £30 for a year and you get games every month.

Now is not really the time to be buying a console.
Both the XBox One and PS4 are due out at Christmas.

Even if you don't want one of those, that will force the prices down on the old consoles.

As for what's best? I own both, I have a slight prefernce for the PS3, but you should get the one that most of your sons friends have, because then he can play online with them.

Be aware that Xbox 360 needs an online subscription, about £20/yr if you shop around, to play online.
