Unpaid day off work due to Tour of Britain

Bit of a rant really! :(

I work part time from 9.15am until 2.45pm it takes me 25 minutes to get from work to my sons school which lets the children out at 3.15pm.

Due to the Tour of Britain tomorrow I am having to take an unpaid day off work because the route basically traps us and other people in our business estate until approximately 3pm.

After school club is fully booked for this week and I have no one else to pick the children up for me. School have said that they can keep the children back for 5 -10 minutes after school but its highly unlikely that all the spectators, cones, diversions, traffic is going to be completely gone for exactly 3pm so I can get there 10 minutes late! By the looks of things its going to take me around 45 to 50 minutes to get to the school if I take another route.

I just find it absolutely ridiculous that they can stop employees leaving work. What if there was a family emergency and someone had to leave work immediately? What about the workplaces that need to leave and return constantly through the day. Its as if everything has to stop just for them!

I won't get reimbursed for my unpaid day off which makes my blood boil as I'm struggling enough. I am not interested in cycling in the slightest so why should myself and other employees be affected by something like this going on outside.

The least they could do seeing as they will be making a fortune from this is reimburse people that are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Its not as if I have any other option.

And, to add insult to injury .... most of us have never heard of tour of britain, so it's a complete waste of time and probably somebody's vanity project.
  • Could your boss not let you go early, and make it up another time ? Is there no room for compromise ?

As there seems to be an alternative (albeit longer) route and other people will be affected, can't you come to an agreement with your employer where you leave early and catch up the time another day?

Nope completely trapped at work as our entrance to the business park is blocked by spectators, cones, tape etc.

Leave your car near the school and cycle to work? So when you leave you'll maybe just look like another of the contestants? ;):D
  • The route may block traffic but not pedestrian access, leave your car outside of the area and walk to it at 1445.

If you are unable to walk e.g. disability speak to the organisers of the event about special access.

There is always a way, they cant physically stop you from leaving work on foot.

I presume the restriction is on vehicles.

I hope that is the worst problem you will encounter in your life. I can almost guarantee you there will me worse to come.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

It is simply a vent I have never once said this is the worst problem I have ever encountered in my life. Are we saying now that every thread on here must be a life or death situation for people to be able to relate? I sincerely hope you never experience some of the problems I have encountered in life thats for sure!

I have spoken to the event organisers and the local council but both are very uninterested. The nearest place I can park is over a mile away to walk to it on foot and there is no guarantee that everywhere will be clear for me to walk to the car at exactly 3pm. Roads in the area are expected to be very busy from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow! And a junction of the motorway has been closed. As I also live in a different town it is impossible for me to make it to the school whichever way I look at it which is obviously why I am forced to take the day off.

Its just pathetic it really is. All this for bikes! :(
