Hi Pania - I have learnt just lately as a previous OP stated that it is best to use a credit card for all internet transactions, ESPECIALLY if you have a maestro card as you have no protection whatsoever once you have given your card number online.

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with this. I'm really worried now because my main account is intelligent finance (halifax) it seems there are loads of halifax related problems, I wonder why?
But, because I do use my card all the time on the net I tend to keep a small amount in my current account at any one time. I put all of my money into a savings account which is linked to my current account, then pretty much daily I transfer what spends I will need into my current account this is done instantly online. I started doing it to stop my impulse spending but I guess it's a great way to keep possible fraud limited, unless of course they manage to go over overdraft??:A

yes somehow this has taken it slightly over the overdraft limit by £3 i think. they probably tried again but got declined. That sounds like a great way to kee it in check and then atleast people can''t steal £150!!! will set that up when i getpaid toto, thanks.
Sadly i got shot of all my credit cards years ago and can't get another due to yukky credit. Think i got a bit lapse with a "free" offer and just forgot what i was doing and ran with it. giving them all my details in the process!! doh!
Right must get to colchester so have got to log off now but thankyou again one and all for your kindness and hugs. xxdebt @05/11/11 £12210.63!! slowly chipping away!!:heart2:impossible is nothing.:heart2:0 -
Our barclays debit card was cloned earlier in the year, but they picked on someone with no available balance!! The cloned details were used in Canada, but each time they tried to use it, they were declined. There is some justice in the world!
Sadly, my friend had her credit card cloned at the same petrol station and the same people in Canada wiped £6000 from her account in one day! She only found out when she tried to use her credit card in Next and it was declined.
Thankfully everything was refunded to her quite quickly, but she still had the embarressment in Next. Lots of people in Norwich had their cards cloned at the same filling station, but the guy was arrested so hopefully they managed to get some of the others involved in the "ring" too.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. thanks LVU, amazing how many people it's happened to. and i thought chip and pin was meant to prevent it but i guess that doesn't cover card transactions. i'm just so glad i checked it this morning and didn't go through the humiliation of standing in a petrol station wondering why my card had been declined.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck there. Hope it all gets sorted out soon.
Unfortunately chip & pin was created to combat lost or stolen credit cards being used in regular shops. What was supposed to combat online/telephone fraud was the 3 digit security number on the back but I was working in website development when that was brought in & I contacted a lot of companies to try & get the work to update their online checkouts so the security number was required but the vast majority thought it was too much hassle.
If you ever find out the companies who've accepted these fraudulent payments, check their websites & if they don't require the security number complain to them & demand compensation for the inconvenience they've caused you.0 -

Will the bank report it to the police? Sorry that you have had this happen to you. But it can be quite scary too. We had our details cloned on a Nationwide card. But they phoned us at home in the evening to tell us about it. Of course they wanted our details, and of course we weren't going to give them out! So OH had to phone them back and get it sorted. All was fine, though we did have to get new cards with different numbers. The really scary thing was that we still can't figure out how they got the numbers. We pretty much only use our cards at Tescos for food and petrol and the local co-op!
Hope they are helpful when you do the form

Hi Pania - big hugs to you - what a horrible thing to happen. Mine was used last year for £1700 but fortunately the bank refunded charges and the money - they rang me to ask about it as they suspected it was dodgy.
I hope it's resolved quickly and easily.

I hope so. When it happened to me, my bank told me I had to report it to the police myself & get a crime reference number, which I did. Since then, I've read that individuals can't report such matters to the police any more - it's down to the bank to do the reporting, & there are concerns that some won't because it will look bad for them. These articles in ITWeek and on internet fraud give more info.Pania
