Budgeting Loan

  • Op I don't think anyone is having a go everyone is trying to help as far as I can see. Surely getting the correct amount of benefit is more important for you and yours kids future then anything else. A budgeting loan will have to be paid back and what happens next time a large purchase needs to be made.
Play nice  Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j
  • I will also point out gently that you say you won't use the credit card because you don't want to be in debt...but any form of loan is a debt.

You are not living within your means if you need these loans.

Pop over to Debt-Free Wannabee - they're not just for those in debt, they can help you budget - and the Old-Style board for some tips and ideas on how to budget better.

Good luck, and also for jobs have you tried temping agencies? :)

This has nothing to do with living beyond their means.

The loan is for capital items

I am myself only sleeping on a mattress and my youngest is still in her cot bed, with not a proper mattress, and a very thin summer duvet (for age 12 months) so I am wanting a budgeting loan to update these

Would you class a laptop as a capital item?
The quote you have posted is also dubious as the OP has contradicted that as well, also I am sorry but you can buy a duvet for under £10 pounds. So you hardly need a loan for that
It has everything to do with living beyond their means.
  • Please remember that the OP is only 24, she is still only young herself. Whilst I agree with some of the comments that have been made (re budgeting), at the other end of the screen is a young single parent with feelings who is getting upset.

Although it is no-one's business, really, applicants should really think carefully before wasting budgeting loans unnecessarily. What happens if a genuine expense arises?

Quilts, mattresses, duvets, a child's bed, a bedstead - they really should be easily affordable out of the month to month receipts to a parent and two children where there are no child-care concerns. Buying three beds and bedding for all of them in one go - yes, that is a reason for a loan. Buying carpets or flooring - understandable. But to say that one needs one just for winter bedding then that is rather foolish.

What happens if a new white good is needed? Again, most are affordable from monthly income but if one is in an electric-only property then electric cookers are ridiculously expensive - that is a more important item than bedding.

Even a new laptop is a more sensible use for the loan.

Again, none of my business - but winter has been coming for months. What are the emergencies that have eaten up the month to month incomes that has made such a loan necessary? A ninety pounds per month housing benefit shortfall is not sufficient explanation.

I wish some of you would stop getting on the girl's case. She's come here for help - not for abuse. Support her and try to guide her. So what if she's making mistakes; she's never been in this position before: I have and I know I made my own mistakes.

Try and have a little sympathy for what seems to be a young mother, abandoned by her partner, who's trying to cope.

£148 for gas and electricity sounds ridiculous for a small household - I am sure that is not necessary. And £350 is also a ridiculous sum for food - again, that ought to be reviewed. (I have no idea about nappies, baby food, though, so excuse if that is a problem.)

Oh please, seriously. NOBODY has abused her and everybody has tried to guide her. But to be honest when you put a laptop above a bed or a haircut above a duvet what do you want us to say? Or should we say "no you are doing everything correct, apply for as much as possible".
Things do not add up, they simply do not.

Yes she has been abused. Too many personal comments from some. It's nothing to do with you whether she has a laptop or not etc etc.

I repeat: she's a young person who has come here for help and advice. That's what she should be getting, not a slagging because she needs to get a hairdo for job appointments - at least she's flipping trying to get a job!

In this modern world btw a laptop is absolutely necessary, especially for a young person who's used to having one. It keeps her occupied on the long lonely nights. Many's a young woman in the past has committed suicide because of the despair they feel in such circumstances.

A little more understanding and a few less personal comments would better reflect the ethos of this site.

I exclude all the decent people who've given good advice and exercised a little restraint.
