Yes she has been abused. Too many personal comments from some. It's nothing to do with you whether she has a laptop or not etc etc.

but it has to do with her priorities

I repeat: she's a young person who has come here for help and advice. That's what she should be getting, not a slagging because she needs to get a hairdo for job appointments - at least she's flipping trying to get a job!

No that is great, get you're hair done but apply to get a budgeting loan for a duvet for a twelve month old child

In this modern world btw a laptop is absolutely necessary, especially for a young person who's used to having one. It keeps her occupied on the long lonely nights. Many's a young woman in the past has committed suicide because of the despair they feel in such circumstances.

hmmm how did my mother cope with no laptop

A little more understanding and a few less personal comments would better reflect the ethos of this site.

no personal comments, just pragmatic advice

I exclude all the decent people who've given good advice and exercised a little restraint.

The majority of people have said the same thing

So people have committed suicide from not having a laptop, what poppycock(I can think of a better word but I am being polite.

£148 for gas and electricity sounds ridiculous for a small household - I am sure that is not necessary. And £350 is also a ridiculous sum for food - again, that ought to be reviewed. (I have no idea about nappies, baby food, though, so excuse if that is a problem.)

nappies are a big expense.. even when you buy shops own brand (which I find better than pampers anyway)

gas and electric prices can depend on your house, style of heating/boiler etc, if you have a key metre, double glasing etc

What a silly thing to say. its not the laptop but the connection to people and giving you something other to focus on other than the current situation.

Nice twisting of my words but no coconut. Other people will read the comments and know exactly what I meant.

The message is clear: stop coming down on the girl because she's asking for advice. Advise her and stop trying to be a smart !!!!!.

Exactly, thank you. I wonder at the sanity of people who post such stupid remarks and have so little understanding of someone who's obviously in a desperate situation.

I thought they were 21 to 25p each. Less than £50 per month. Do children really use more than eight per day?

No, gas and electricity depends on how much you use - and £148 is excessive for two rooms regardless.

If your month to month income is £800 then you should not be spending £500 on food, heat and power. At £350 per month I'd be expecting a delivery from Ocado, not Asda. If you genuinely need to spend £500 per month on that and £100 on other essentials leaving only £200 for sundries then you definitely do not want to be wasting a budgeting loan on bedding.

Is there an Ocado near her? Could her mother perhaps take her to Aldi or Lidl once a month?

From what the girl says it isn't bedding which is the immediate issue and why she needs the budgeting loan: she needs an actual bed for herself and a mattress for one of her children. I've suggested she go to the SVP for both and sees a GP to get a referral to Occupational Therapy for an orthopaedic mattress for herself as she has a bad back.

If you think the heating bills are high perhaps we should ask the young lady what kind of heating she has, how she uses it and what can be done to reduce those bills.

    .

You'd be surprised! sometimes more sometimes less.

of course it depends on how much you use.. but if you have a modern boiler it will be more efficient. If you have good insulation you need your heating on less. If you have double glasing you need heating on less. its well known that key metres are more expensive than paying by direct debit. even cookers - I'm sure my sisters gas cooker costs more to run than my electric one.
  • The point most people seem to be missing is that OP asked a question on a time scale for a budgeting loan which she applied for as she fits the criteria (she has done nothing wrong in applying in for it - the government make the rules and will decide if she is eligible, it is not for people to debate on this thread if she should be allowed it or not - if you want to debate the rules/criteria, start your own thread)

Some have kindly pointed out that the OP might be wise in starting another thread with her SOP and asking for help with budgeting - others have just taken the liberty to just go ahead and give their opinions on this anyway. The OP did not ask for help with budgeting, I doubt now she ever will after the comments on that she has received on here regarding it.

She is trying, she has joined the grocery challenge thread to help her, she is a new to the thread so give her chance. In fact the thread itself advises people to spend normal for the first month then see where you can cut down.

OP people on the debt-free want to be board are more sympathic and understanding, they have been there and will give advise on how to cut down outgoings. I know you are not in debt but you are in a situation where you need to cut back on your monthly spending so you can save a little each month.

Well said. I hope the young lady follows your advice.
