The Great 'shrinking food and other items' Hunt

I bought a bag of frozen leeks from Farmfoods yesterday. Putting them away I noticed that the bag was £1 for 750g. Previous bag in the freezer was £1 for 1kg. And they used to do 3 for £2 on own brand frozen veg almost permanently and that's stopped.
So price stays the same but contents shrink by 25% minimum.
Anyone aware of a national leek shortage or is this another because they can and think we're thick' price rise?0 -
Spuds have gone up in price too.- I wonder if there is some sort of legislation controlling the weights in which they have to be offered for sale.
There used to be for bread but now I think it is possible to mess around with the size of a loaf ?!
Farm Foods sell a reasonably honest 800 gm loaf but I am not sure if the Chorleywood bread process allows a loaf to be fluffy but wetter and that is why it is packed in a poly bag?

It appears that ASDA SmartPrice whole chickens are now an average of just 1.3kg. They were as heavy as 1.7kg.
I think there must be a new sorting process that allows chicken carcasses to be graded to an exact weight - the two discounters Aldi & Lidl tend to sell a 1.25 kg chicken for £2.99.0 -
I was wandering down the cereals aisle the other day to pick up my sugar free Alpen and was pleasantly surprised to find that they had gone DOWN in price, from £4.29 where they had been for some months, to £3.99. I thought - well done.
Hang on though I thought, this bag fits easier in the hand. So I wondered, "what does it weigh?" Ah, the bag is now 1.1kgs and I got home and found my old bag. The old one weighed 1.3kgs !!!
Instead of a nice reduction, when comparing on a unit weight basis the Alpen had gone up by 10%. Now is that sneaky or what?
For the same product you also need to be aware that 2 boxes no longer equal one bag.
For those of us who eat the porridge created by running super heated oats over steel rollers here is a farmer/miller complaing about the falling value of oats.
There seems to be a cartel amongst all the supermarkets; has anyone seen the basic product being sold for less than £750 a tonne.

You need to work out the price per Kg/L/Ea for all this stuff...and factor in all the multi-buy discounts and whatnot. I use I Spy Prices, whcih does all that (for all the big supermarkets, but not for Aldi/Lidl, which is a shame).
My favourite regular lager is Kronenbourg, I don't mind if it comes in cans or bottles, four pack, 10 pack, whatever pack. I just want to find the best value way to buy (and where).

I use their alerts to tell me when things like this are on offer.
A couple of items mentioned further up this page.

In fact the b*gg*rs have put the prices up - with the honorable exception of Asda, who is price matching Aldi.

Sadly, one of the reasons that the size of things like chocolate bars are shrinking, is in in order to meet ..... government targets.
All the major manufacturers have signed up to the Public Responsibility Deal on Public Health and promised to limit the number of calories in a chocolate bar. And of course, there isn't much you can do to reduce the number of calories in a chocolate bar, other than make it smaller. So it's all for you own good.:)
Naturally the fact that this also allows the manufacturers to effectively jack up the price without anyone supposedly noticing is entirely co-incidental.0 -
There is a rumour that Ebola is forcing up the price of chocolate - think about it - even if you were feeling fit and needed the work, would you want to sort cocoa beans picked in West Africa.
I have stocked up on Lidl's favourite weekend loss leader of 100 gm bars for as little as £0.17 ea .

I have noticed spuds have gone DOWN in price. Earlier this year, loose jacket spuds were £1.60/kg. Now it's a £1.
Cheaper to buy loose than the prepacked pack of 4 as they weigh 800-850g and costs £1 a pack. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
