First day on my own with a toddler and newborn

My toddler is incredibly sensitive and initially shy when he meets people. I've just been to a 'stay and play' with him at a local children's centre and trying to actually get him through the door was a challenge in itself!
He can even be tantrumy when we take him to see either set of grandparents. I know toddlers are a law unto themselves, but I am looking forward to the day I can take him places and when people say hello to him he doesn't totally spack out!

Thanks for all the suggestions
Now I could use some advice on getting my nearly-3 year old to calm down and stop being such a tantrum thrower! :rotfl:
Not sure how effective it is all the time but my friend's 4 year old can sometimes get quite a temper. She usually stops, kneels down to his level, firmly holds his hand and asks him firmly why he's upset. It seems to confuse him because he's not getting yelled at straight away. She then gets him to "use his words" and he usually forgets about why he was kicking off after thinking about it for a minute.
Otherwise, the super nanny naughty step technique is fab *if* you use it *exactly* as she says. It requires a lot of consistency and willpower (my cousins were awful at using it with their kids - they'd stick them on the step but would engage them in conversation or let them off if they got up a few times. Their kids are now little madams at age 5/6)“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A.
