hard drive gone after 3 years

The first thing I would do (if you can) is test the hard drive yourself. You'll need to use another computer to download an ISO image file, burn that image onto a CD, and then put the CD in your laptop and boot from it (you may have to hit DEL or F12 or something during the boot sequence to tell it to boot from the CD instead of the hard disk).
Option 2 on this page should help. If you have a Samsung hard drive (a Samsung laptop doesn't necessarily use a Samsung hard drive), have a look at option 4.

If the hard drive is okay, then you're being fleeced by a lazy repair man. It's easy to earn a few quid by making you buy a hard drive you don't need rather than trying to actually get your system working again.0 -
There's a slim chance the disk is faulty, it happens, but more likely is a slight corruption of profile, often caused by not shutting down properly - if you google that error, you will see it time and time again, and it's hardly ever a faulty hd.
Same error, fixed by F8 then system (not factory) restore
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4760171
The procedure to fix it goes something like this
possibly do a disk diagnostic from a boot cd if it was making clinking noises.
boot pressing F8, try all the options, including system restore, chkdsk c: /F from command prompt
failing that
insert the rescue cd based on linux, http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-express/download_old.html boot from it, copy any data required to an external drive. £35 repairs often skip this step, losing some or all of your data going for the easy option of F4, then walk away
factore restore it, by holding F4 at boot, which takes 10-15 minutes. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/supportOwnersHowToGuidePopup.do?howto_guide_seq=6375&prd_ia_cd=N0000137&map_seq=39923
hopefully after that it may be a fully working machine.
if the hd is really faulty, buy another hd, insert it, insert recovery cd, reinstall windows - if you don't have the dvd, niftydigits may be able to magic one up for you if you mention the model and operating system.
At the end of all this, backup to an external drive using disk image software (disk image not clone), and create a boot cd, and do the same for all your pc's, then you will never lose any data, and be able to recover from these situations easily

Even if it is failing, you could do the job yourself for less and get a better HDD in the bargain. A three month warranty on a HDD indicates that they are not giving you a new drive.
But I get the feeling that we are just banging our heads against a brick wall here. So do what you want to do.0 -

If they only give 3 month warranty, then they're a rogue business. They have to give 1 year by law. I would get a quote from another company.0 -

What software was the drive tested with? And what kind of failure was it?
It seems odd that it would just show an unqualified "fail" when it still boots up. Was it just a few bad sectors?
As others have said, if the hard drive's faulty, just buy a new one.
