hard drive gone after 3 years

My harddrive has gone machine is 3 years old it was quite a good samsung one too. Any comments is this normal

Gone? Where did it go? Get a new one and fit it yourself. It can happen, that's why making backups are pushed so often here.

Some last for years. Some arrive dead. Some go pop after a shortish time. I wouldn't say that 3 years is especially unusual.

Some manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty so worth checking the make of drive and if that is one with that.

I hope you made recovery CDs/DVDs or took full image backups as most machines just have a recovery partition on the harddrive these days.

Check dates carefully to see if it's in warranty.

But they're incredibly fragile precision devices, spinning at 6000+rpm in high heat conditions. It's a wonder that they work at all. 3 years is not great, but some fail, sadly.

Backing up is essential.

Since a new HDD will cost at least that, I'm sceptical. Is that the cost including a new HDD?

What are the symptoms?
