Can you give us the answer to the following questions please:
Does the Laptop Start?
Do you get an error on screen?
If YES what is the exact error message?
Do you get to the Log in screen?
Will it let you Log in?
Once we have your reply we can HELP you otherwise we can't do much to save your data or money!

I doubt you need a new hard disk at all
Try all the safe mode options, F8 at boot.

Failing a fix, factory restore is the quickest solution
if you have data you need to recover, see the rescue cd at the end of the speedup sticky, along with the instruction to factory restore.!!

New HDDs have a two year guarantee. If your HDD had 'gone', you wouldn't even get to the 'User Profile cannot be loaded' screen.
Get your laptop back. I'm off to the gym. You are in good hands here.0
