    This makes complete sense; offsetting the start and finish times to spread the loading of the grid. But why, mainly in the south East is there a 2 hour slot at peak rate slipped in the middle??
    Is there somebody other than you who has the 2 hour peak slot in the middle? (trying to determine if this is intentional 2 hour block, or if your equipment is set up wrong)

    I would guess, if it is the same for a whole region, that the electricity board for that area decided that it would be more usefull for the public to have some of the off-peak period during more sociable hours.

    I like BST in my house because we can get up and have showers before the E7 switches over at 8am. It is not likely we will get up and have showers before 7am when the clocks change, so we will be showering in peak times then.

    I personally can see no other reason than to increase revenue? covertly?
    In most cases, it wouldn't increase revenue, even if that was the plan.

    Storage heating (pretty much the only thing using a load of energy overnight) is switched at the meter, and so would turn off during the 2 hour block.
  • good point from Archbishop about customers being blissfully unaware of the 7 hours switchover times . The OP s original fault was a one off faulty meter set up, however there is a vast number of eco7 users out there unaware of A. that their old analogue timer is switching over in the middle of the afternoon etc or B. more importantly , because they have gas central heating now, they should be on single rate billing and not paying an expensive 16p + per kwhr premium ratefor their electicity. This would be for people who have a well behaving digital or radio telemeter which actually knows what time it is

    I am learning that its not only me, It might be of interest that in the link related by "wkdboi" previously;
    https://customerservices.npower.com/...eak-periods%3F
    It is produced by NPower and does show this 2 hour slot, but its only shown from 0030 till 0230 and only in the South East area? What is special about us I wonder to make us feel so special to all others nationally? I strongly advise anyone in the South East to check out when their meters switch, if 9 hours between then its highly likely you are also paying for 2 hours at Peak Rate without knowing while asleep.

    You need to ask that? The south east places by far the biggest load on the grid.

    I agree with you that E7 times should be much better publicised, but you are miles off to try and suggest that the timings are a con by the suppliers (they have had nothing to do with it) or that it's a revenue making exercise (if they wanted to do that there are far easier ways!)
  • The only certain way to check your E7 timings is to watch the meter when it switches. For this I found it useful to have a video camera on the meter for each 24 hour cycle (use minimum frame rate) and review in fast forward to spot the time indicator changes. Bear in mind that now is British Summer time and on the last Sunday in October we go back to GMT...thus timings need adjusting by one hour (unless in the unlikely event your meter changes then)

    Also note this is only useful for meters without wireless control...these can be changed anytime by your supplier or whoever has control of your meter.

    I should think the densely populated and industrial areas further north would make greater demands on the National grid than this southeastern rural garden of England?

    This must be, as my Hungarian grandmother used to say, "szarkasztikus"

    Apart from it being known as the lowest form of wit, please explain why? If you look at the government produced population and electricity consumption statistics its all there in black and white.:D
