The other thing to bear in mind with any multi-rate meters, some adjust for BST others stay on GMT.

  • Thanks for this, I shall be keeping an eagle eye to the meter upon the last Sunday of October just to be sure.

    Dear xxxxx

Thank you for your e-mail dated 29 June 2012.

    Please
firstly let me assure you that although EDF Energy advisors have misinformed you
over the timings of your Economy 7 rates, we have not done this intentionally.
As previously explained the Economy 7 timings are set by your Meter Operator and
    not EDF Energy.

I have calculated based on readings from your night rate
that your average night time consumption is 6.37 units so 2 hours of night time
usage would be 1.83 units per night. Between 18.04.2005 when the meter was
installed and 22.05.2012 when we last got a meter reading there are 2591 days.
Over this period 1.83 units per night would equate to 4742 units of night time
electricity which we charged at the day rate. This works out at £673.83 but if
we charged these units at the night rate it would be £244.21.

    Due to
you being misinformed by our representatives I am willing to credit you the
    difference which would total £429.62.

    Please advise whether you find
this acceptable and if so I will send a cheque for the credit and close your
    complaint.

    Kind regards

    xxxxxxxx

So you only got compensation because they incorrectly informed you of the times.

Exactly what I said in post #12 :D

If they told you it was continuous, and gave you times, then this was their error. I don't know why they would give you times when they simply don't know what they are. Unless they said "the times are usually/likely to be 00:30 - 07:30.

Well done, you are and were totally correct! ;) Problem was getting them to admit this and to squeeze the dollar from their coffers. It took a lot of effort and much time...but the dog with the bone wasn't for turning! :D:D:D It was not as if they immediately put their hands up to it and realistically calculated my losses, many months with offers of £20, £50 and fobbing off platitudes a plenty-this is what was objectionable and had me use the label; crooks!...which applies to most denationalised utilities answerable to the shareholders need for profit and the fat cats getting fatter, even when they get sacked there is always a nice payoff...and its all at the little mans expense. I am hopeful in the spirit of my post-it might strike a chord with others out there in similar situation.

I don't think anyone on this forum readily defends EDF.

However your original post implied that EDF were aware of this 2 hour 'error' and it was a deliberate 'scam'; and hence you labelled them 'crooks'.

If any of the Utility companies were supplying your electricity, exactly the same situation would have occurred.

I think this is the crux of the matter.

The actual problem was created by the equipment at the residence, rather than the fault of the supplier. Whether that fault was due to the meter installer, or if it was just what the old electricity board wanted, I guess we will never know.

BTW, how have you resolved the 2 rogue hours? Is the meter being swapped?

Now I am aware, I avoid these two hours via timers and enjoy the extra hour each end.:D

They were aware from the moment I told them, they decided to hope I would get fed up and go away, until months later they finally admitted and started to make offers.

    Another landslide for the consumer.

Hi Cardew, I'm also thinking further about this, all the meter manufacturers must take their lead from all utility companies for their meter specifications and timings. I do not think it beyond the realms of possibility or conspiracy theory they would all think it a grand idea for upping the profits to slip in a couple of hours high rate while most people are asleep to notice? :o

The addition of an hour either end to balance 7 hours cheap electric would be seen by many as ideal for the early morning shower or late night baking as mooted by some here on MSE-human nature being as it is they might'n see a manipulation in the meter timings, but rather a meter error and keep it on the QT less they lose it?

My Utility company EDF were reluctant and evasive in the beginning to admit to all of this...after robustly pressed their initial response was in broad terms "you still get 7 hours at the cheap rate-so wheres the problem?" FWIW I do not think my meter is an isolated case. Other Utility companies nationally might have made this crystal clear to customers...alas I can only speak as I found with mine.:(
