yes i'm going too, printed all the other recipes out last nite to try!
I'm not sure if I cooked the malt loaf abit too long, it was a bit crispy on the outside? should it be softer? still tastes nice though! yum and a slice is very filling.0 -

Malt Loaf Recipe
Preheat oven to gas mark 4. Put 3 weetabix, 4oz sugar and 40z of raisins or sultanas in a mixing bowl and add 1 mug of hot black tea. Leave to soak until the mixture has gone cold. Stir and add in 2 eggs. Stir again and add in 4oz self raising flour and 2oz porridge oats (optional but if not using oats substitute for 2 more ounces of flour). Mix thoroughly and add to a loaf tin and bake in the oven.
Can I just ask how long you bake this for and at what temperature, I tried it the other day and it was lovely but I don't think I cooked it for long enough

I've just made Black-Saturn's malt loaf - but substituted weetabix with Shredded Wheat .. it is gorgeous.
I've got 4 boxes of Shredded Wheat to work my way through ... don't ask OH got it into his head that he'd always eat Shredded Wheat so bought loads on special offer. Guess what .. he now prefers my breakfast concoction of oats, fruit and yogurt.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -
Hello,I have a malt loaf recipe that my Mum gave me,I haven't made it for ages, must buy some malt, but it was very nice, especially spread with butter
4oz demerara sugar
8oz SR flour
2oz sultanas
1tbs malt extract
Milk to mix.
Mix all the ingredients together to a dropping consistency.Put in a greased and lined 1lb loaf tin.Bake at Gas no 3 for 1½ hours.0 -
An alternative recipe I use is:
6 oz. dark brown sugar
6 oz. sultanas/mixed fruit
Soak with a cup of black cold tea for a few hours
Then add 1 egg and 8 oz. of self raising flour
Cook on about 160 degrees (cannot remember how long for but about an hour to hour and a half - when knife comes out clean).0 -

i have 'malt and cod liver' oil in the cupboard - can i use that? it doesnt taste fishy.0 -
Hi,Brokenwings
I think the extract that I used was just plain malt,I got it from a health food shop,I don't think it had cod liver oil in it.If yours doesn't taste fishy,I suppose you could try it and see.

I've tried the malt loaf recipe that came with my BM a couple of times and each time it's tasted lovely but my youngest DS was put off by the fact that it was quite light in colour  ...so when I made it today I added 2 tablespoons cocoa powder - and voila! lovely dark malt loaf....and it DIDN'T taste of chocolate either!
am well pleased. :T
