The children are going to make a little certificate using thick paper with DAD written on it. They're going to write down words that describe their dad all around it and draw his face on it. Then we're going to roll it up and tie it with a ribbon.0

Mothers Day, or to give it the proper name "Mothering Sunday", has a religious basis.
Fathers Day, GrandParents days etc are complete inventions by the card industry to make people buy more cards.
So call me scrooge but I don't see why we all have to slavishly spend money just because some bright spark in marketing has invented a fictitious day. And if you must do it then don't fall even further into the trap and spend money buying presents as well as a card.
Right - I'm ready and braced for the backlash!
Reaper I agree it is utter crassness to be sucked in by the marketeers.
How much tat is generated in the western world for our follies of mothers day, easter, xmas, birthdays, valentines day etc etc. There must another way and I think there are other ways to express thought and gratitude that don't involve buying tat made in china. An ecard, a phone call, or get the beneficairy to set up a wish list on Amazon or even plain entertain and cook for them or buy an experience as already suggested. Remember most of todays gifts might eventually end up in a landfill or as incinerator fuel.
Sounds like a rant I know but I realised the other week approx £45 had been spent on birthday cards for my little girl and they've just gone in the recycling - that money could have gone towards something really worthwhile.Debt free, the best way to be. :A0 -
My OH is going to be sorry he told DD today to put the protective case on her new mobile to stop it getting scratched. They are so naff and she pointed out that he doesn't have one - butttttttttttttt she is now going to make him one for Father's day. She is looking for the perfect flowerly fabric with some odd bits of ribbon and sequins. He had better use it:D

I dont buy cards for anyone really.
.why spend £3 on a card to go in the bin the following week..when you can buy 3 lottery tickets instead for them..you could be giving them a great gift then!!! plus they will feel obliged to give you something if they win!!..is that wrong on my part??

Some stores of Boots (well the ones i've been into recently) have Old Spice Gift Sets, containing the aftershave and a body spray, reduced down to £2.50 + there's an offer of Buy 3 and get the cheapest free on all mens toiletries.
That's one for my dad, one for her dad..... and one for me :j0 -
Perhaps something topical at this moment is it's been 25 years since the Falklands war. There is an excellent book out at the moment called:
Vulcan 607 by Rowland White is priced at £6.99
which describes the ordeal faced by the RAF to get the Vulcan 4000 Miles beyond its maximum range to destroy the landing strip at Port Stanley. It took fifteen Victor tankers and seventeen inflight refuellings to get it there!! How do they get back again?
This Book written by Rowland White is priced at £6.99 but ASDA have it for sale at under £4 can't remember exacts about £3.89? An excellent read.
a quote from Andy McNab "Exciting and breathtakingly pacy......This is exactly how modern history should be written"
Alternatively you could join as a member of XH558 the Vulcan is being restored at the moment, lets put this beautiful flying machine back in the air for everyone to see .......... again. This is a link to thier website:-

My Dad loves watching the Tour de France on TV each year. As it is coming to the UK this year and very close to where I live in Kent, I am giving my Dad a Tour de France official programme which costs £4.99 (from any newsagent). He doesn't really go in for Father's day in a big way, and certainly does not expect expensive gifts, but he does appreciate being remembered.
I have also printed out some maps of the London to Canterbury section (stage 1) from the Kent county council website and popped in a little home-made invitation for him (and Mum) to come and have a special French-style picnic with us and the kids in what we think will be a great spot to watch the action.
You can find the Tour de France Stage 1 maps here:http://www.kent.gov.uk/publications/leisure-and-culture/tour-de-france-route-maps.htm - far more detail than the ones on the official race website.0 -
Dont spoil him too much, remember Mothers Day comes nine months after Fathers Day::j
