I watched the programme and to be honest the stir fry looked quite nice.
Now i can cook, well kind of, no ones died yet!
I used to be a big fan of his and i would regularly watch his programs, especially the grow your own one.
I thought watch the program and see what happens, never know might be good. He can infectious with his enthusiasm and gets involved with the cooking.
This program is not really for people on a low budget, it has to be said it more for higher up. My sister watched this program and she regularly spends £100+ a week and thought it was rubbish. Her words were " where the hell am i going to buy a blender like that, just looked in the catalogue and it costs £150 quid!"
My sister can cook sunday dinners, but nothing much else. so this program is supposed to be for her.
"Oh and those pans where i get them from? " I said to her just use a rectangle roasting tin or cake tin. She said oh that not what he said.
To be honest i preferred Economy Gastronomy, better ideas and really took the time to tell you how to make things from scratch.
But what really peed me off was the pizza and bean thing. A supposed heating engineer sat in the back with a bottle of beer, glass and a fake cockney accent. No pizza costs £12 from a takeaway, i know. A 16" pizza costs about £9.50 and thats a full blown meat feast. So its a load of nonsense. In Hackney its even cheaper!
My partners a heating engineer and he wouldn't dare go on telly with a beer in his hand!
Or having beans with his fish pie, yeah right, you could tell it was fake by the look in his eyes.
I'm not great at budgeting but i'm getting better, i do need help with ideas. But this program just isn't for me as lots of the recipes he's done in the past on his other programs. so i can just flip back and watch them and they less preachy.
Sorry peeps, i think the program isn't that great. Buts thats mainly because i like his older shows better.
No one has to spend £150 on a blender or food processor....there are plenty of cheaper ones around.
I thought he used the different pans/dishes for the pizza to show you could use virtually anything to pop a pizza in. I have a pizza tray.....cost about £2.50....but if I wanted smaller I could use a couple of cake tins or a pie plate or a quiche dish....the lid off a pyrex dish.....Have you seen the prices of Domino's pizzas.....
Andy the gasman has been in at least one book....Jamie's Dinners......Andy the Gasman's stew.....and it's very nice.

My problem with the show and many others like it is that they don't actually show you any real techniques.....and how can they when they fit so many dishes into 25 mins (take out the advert time).
I watched Paul Hollywood's Bread and actually did learn how to knead bread properly....and can now turn out good handmade bread if I want as opposed to bread out of the breadmaker.0 -
You can see how some people can be sucked into a £12 pizza. e.g. A small Dominos Hot & Spicy is £12.59. For some bizarre reason there's a whole generation of people that think they have to buy Dominos. There are usually other pizza takeaways available locally at half that price, but I guess people just got sucked into the whole Dominos marketing machine.
Me, I'd go and get one for £2-2/50 from the nearest supermarket, spend £10 on goodies, treats and food for the week .... and go home all smug knowing that I'd gone home with a pizza, treats, a week's food rather than just a pizza. And then it's a twice-yearly treat.... not weekly or daily.0 -
... I thought spending £14 on a piece of meat was unrealistic. ...
Apparently that was a 2kg piece, so that's £7 per kilo.
The recipe http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/beef-recipes/mothership-sunday-roast-brisket says serves 6 and also says save half for leftovers, so is that 1kg piece for 6 people for £7 ie £1.17 per person?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
I'm an OStyler and I use Yeo Valley yoghurt. Or Rachel's Organic. And I only have a grocery budget of £300 a month to feed 7 adults.
Can we stop willy waving now?

You have completely missed my point. I don't have a problem with Yeo Valley yoghurt - (infact I also have a pot in my fridge!) it was serious product placement - the camera really lingered - everyone in my house laughed at the blatant product placement of it and the Uncle Ben's. I have already said that I have the book and I like it, but there are a few things that I have noticed.
I am going to try the brisket after I have had a chat with a butcher. I normally wouldn't spend £14 on a joint, but I need to work out how many meals I will get out of it.0 -
But fresh spinach is not expensive if you use it properly!
How many of you buy bagged-and-washed salads? They cost at least £1 for a meagre bagful. You can have heaps of fresh baby spinach for 90p and just use it as you would lettuce. It makes lovely salads as it has more taste and crunch imo and when you've put your favourite dressing on, you won't tell the difference anyway.
I have loads of spinach in the garden it is growing like wildfire so for the price of 10 seeds (5p) I have had a continuous crop for three months.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Product placement is entirely legal now, but as you say it was very blatant which we're not really used to yet and may never be.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Saw this on MSN:
http://t.food.uk.msn.com/food/jamies-money-saving-meals-did-the-costs-add-up
They seemed to try pretty hard to inflate the prices as much as possible.
They don't seem to get that you don't actually have to buy a whole bottle of soy sauce, jar of jam or bag of peas each time you make the thing...and, in not doing so, completely miss the whole "spend money to save money thing" that Jamie's on about.0 -
I enjoyed watching the programme and it gave me a few ideas to play with. I think that all these frugality programmes, books, blogs etc., etc., should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. I tend to assume that all the authors are getting something from their efforts, be the reward financial or otherwise, and I do not necessarily hang on every word that is said. I take exactly what I want from them and leave the rest.
I had already found the donated copy of Jamie's book in my local library and have jotted down a few of the recipes so, as I see it, I've gained a few good ideas at scant cost to myself - all good.

.... and I'm sure Colman's et al pay handsomely for it. What went through my mind was that Jamie's now abandoned Sainsbury's basics mustard is far more effective for coating things as it's runnier and, of course, cheaper. Same is true of basics horseradish, perfect for binding HM burgers.
Do you imagine we'll see Aldi product placement any time soon? I notice there was no discernible label on his 'cheap olive oil'.0
