I can't see another thread on this so apologies - if there is may e mods could merge.
It's a joke, all the team doing coatings, nutrition etc - not really teaching people anything.
He's aping pizzas homemade at £1.53 per portion whatever that is (not got that far in show yet) I can make six generous pizzas deep pan with ingredients specifically for them, with plenty left over, for less than £1.00 per pizza. Bear in mind asda sell pizzas for a quid anyway. And my pizzas would be cheaper if it was say chicken and mushroom that could be leftovers anyway!!! Rant over. X

It always makes me laugh at these Chef's who say they are cooking good food on a budget, we could wipe the floor with them! They give you menu's that cost anything from £1.50 upwards per portion, that to me isn't a cheap serving and like you pizzas I make never cost that much :eek:0 -
He was, however, comparing the cost of the pizza to a takeaway one which was £12.
Remember, OStylers are not the target demographic of the show. He's trying to get people who wouldn't normally cook, to cook. And I think £1.53 for a lovely pizza (not in any way comparable to an Asda pizza) is a decent price.0 -
Hello
Yes, I had mixed feelings watching this. Could see where he was going on the home-made stuff, even the pizza's, and I think promoting that is good - knowing what's in it and making it cheaper from scratch.
Although a bit surprised at stuff like prawns and salmon being chucked into fish pie. Not sure that's really affordable, unless people are able to buy reduced stuff at supermarkets, or are lucky enough to be near a proper market at closing time. Hmmm. At least it's better than the joke that was the great British 'budget' menu.

Me and DH watched this last night and I have to agree with you about the fish pie and the pizzas, crushed fennel seeds - really on a tight budget?! We were laughing at some of the prices the fish pie especially though as I think it worked out about £6-£7 didn't it? Families on a budget certainly wouldn't be well advised to spend that much :0 I shall continue to watch though to see if any good recipes are on as they can always be adapted to suit an OS budgetProud mummy to 3 beautiful boys!0

Gigervamp is right - we are not the demographic of this show. And I like Jamie, I really do, and I think he's doing good things.
But surely we - Old Stylers, people on low incomes, people who really need to make every penny work for them until it drops dead of sheer exhaustion - are of a sufficient number in order to justify a TV company finally making a program that makes sense to us - and perhaps even teach the old dogs a few new tricks ?
I mean, just look at the girl called Jack - she got a book deal, she's got a massive amount of readers/followers - and then the numbers of people needing the help from foodbanks - surely that shows that there is a need ? And you know, a book still costs, and there have been plenty of complaints that Jack's book will be out of reach of many it's actually directed to - but a TV show - TV licence is already there for most people, surely that's an even better way to reach this huge substratum of population ?
Something like Superscrimpers - but actually useful, and filmed with intelligence and compassion. Something devised and presented by the likes of Weezl, or Jack, or Frugal Queen, or Memory Girl - you know, our sort of people
Now, I know that Weezl would rather have her teeth pulled out without anaesthetic that go on telly - Jack says she does not feel up to the concept - but Froogs is already spreading her magic on radio, and just look how fabulous Memory Girl is in action: http://mortgagefreeinthree.com/2013/08/elaine-colliar-tedx-the-frugal-tedx-talk/
It's true, Jamie does not speak to the likes of us..... Isn't it about ruddy time someone did ????0 -
I thought it was very expensive. You'd need a freezer, be feeding 6-8 - and his price per meal per person is double my target daily spend.
You also need a lot of kit and equipment.... and feel confident you've bought the right type and will be using them religiously ever after.
What they never give you in these programmes is the information to be able to freeze what's left over and reheat it. e.g. that fish pie, serves 6-8, so give information on freezing 6-8 individual portions and how long they'd take to reheat and if you need to defrost first.
Yesterday my "eating out" food bill was 57p (reduced £1 sandwich in the CoOp) and a 9p banana for tea0 -
There might very well be a TV show by Jack. She said on Twitter last night:I didn't watch, but been INUNDATED with tweets. Can't say much but TV meeting Tues. Terrified, but won't do something unless it's 'right'.0

I hear you there! My family don't mention Jamie Oliver to me too often because I nearly explode - lecturing the Americans on healthy eating when his cookbooks give Paula Deen a run for her money in unhealthiness. You CANNOT be pouring half a bottle of olive oil on things and tutting at fast food in the same breath. Fat is fat is fat and 'good' fats are as fattening as 'bad' fats when needing to get out of the obese category.
Now he's trying to go all thrifty by only spending £30 per meal... .. The hypocrisy he's capable of makes me so angry that I lose my Welsh accent and go into my Nan's scouse. "Well, if dat brisket is so cheap, I'll buy two dere lah. Meff."
Sorry, back to pizza and NOT giving a TV chef a Toxteth Kiss....
I can make a pizza base using the Skint Foodie's recipe (makes 4 bases a batch for greedy people like me and Mr Maity) and shopping only from Mr T's for 8.6324 pence per base. (I can post my workings out if needed, I have a spreadsheet and everything!!)
Making a mozzerella pizza - we'd use 2 mozzerella balls for 4 pizzas (again, greedy) and one carton of passata (give or take a little less than the whole thing) so 29.25p for toppings per pizza. Grand total of 38p (rounded up) per pizza.
Ham & Mushroom - I'd use a pack of ham between 4 pizzas with mozzerella so that would be 18.75p per pizza in ham - a grand total of 56.75p
Adding the devil's spawn (mushrooms) I'd use about half of a pack of button mushrooms per batch which adds another 9p per pizza - a grand total of 65.75p per pizza. That's with us being pigs and ignoring sensible portioning.
I have to remind myself that Jamie's Money Saving Meals are not for Old Stylers or Old Style lurkers, they're for the type of people I used to serve on tills at a particular supermarket beginning with a W that has a kind of aspirational lifestyle tag attached to it. The ones where you'd ring up £200 on their 'weekly shop' and wonder what the heck they were actually going to make for dinner. Kids can't survive on cured meats, chateau-headache red wine and kettle chips!
But these are the patronising so-and-so's thinking it's quaint that people like me cook their own food, try to meal plan and shop with a list who Jamie Oliver in turn patronises and makes money out of with his book sales.
And breathe out...."We always find something, hey Didi, to give us the impression we exist?" Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot.

£30 per meal? Where did you get that number?0

Don't you think you're generalising a bit there too?I don't want to sound rude, but there's been so many arguments lately about this.
If Jamie didn't do this programme people would complain he was always cooking extortionately. Now he is trying to cook on a budget (something some who has been on TV and writing bestselling cookbooks since they were in their early 20s is unlikely to know anything about), he's being criticised for spending too much. People from the richer side of the fence criticise poor people for spending too much on non-essentials or ready meals. Poor people criticise the rich for the ways they spend their disposable income and not understanding cheap. I'm just sick of this stupid class war that seems to be going on at the minute.
On another note, I could spend less on shopping. But I like food and sometimes I like to buy nice ingredients. Now, I don't spend anywhere near what Jamie is proposing (is it really close to 30 quid a meal?), but I can't say that I wouldn't if I had a great deal of disposable income. Food's what I love and as it's my main hobby, so I don't feel like it's money spent on just survival fuel, which is how a lot of OS-ers seem to feel.
