Perhaps you should resign yourself to being THE parent. A role which normally falls to the woman in a relationship, but one which we all know you are well capable of. This would relieve your wife of responsibilities which she believes she is not suited for.

It is possible that when she realises that you understand her limitations (please don't put it like that) then a lot of your problems may disappear. She can take over the normal male role of breadwinner and you become the parent with care. Please note that there are much better ways of phrasing this - I hope another regular will be along to do it for me.

Patanne, I am already "the" parent and from where I am standing it is not a "resignation" as it is a role I find very rewarding. However, I am not about to give up my working life either as I believe there is a balance to be struck. I was the one who wanted a family in the first place, so I don't see an issue with me being the one doing the most childcare.

I know it upsets my wife greatly that this world in the 21st Century places so much importance on so called "gender roles". For the first time today, I can see why.

Chev, thank you for your concern. My wife had a desire to run away from responsibilities long before giving birth!

Today was the first day of our week together as a family. The snow had fallen in Derbyshire but we were not home as we'd stayed with the in-laws a little further south following our "second Christmas". Taking advantage of this, we drove further south still, finding ourselves in Birmingham to go to the Sealife centre. Although a little expensive it was a great day out with some incredible creatures to see. Each display was carefully thought out with lots of attention to detail and close viewing for visitors. We were especially impressed to see penguins and a giant green turtle but it was a little disappointing to hear only one pool was dedicated to ingidenous species. However, it's a place I would recommend visiting for people of all ages.

We also visited the museum and art gallery. Personally, I found the exhibits quite mixed in terms of quality but some fascinating items to be seen nonetheless. As entry is completely free of charge, I'd recommend a visit to anybody passing through the city and an MSE choice too. :) Unfortunately, it seemed most people there disagreed as they were all in Selfridges to find a questionable "bargain" in the sales. The shops were too busy even for my wife, she suggested we left it to the trendies, for whom I'm thankful are no longer interested in the "Bakewell look" and headed back home.

Arriving back to snow, we had a great evening playing about in Land Rovers, so all in all a great day without spending much cash at all.

Think I'm finally getting the idea of an MSE day out. :D

Yes Happy Birthday too Alex - hope you have a whole week of celebrations.

Yes I think the role of proper parent always seems to fall on one person - be that male or female. There is always one who can be depended upon no matter what. And while sometimes it can be a bit of a bind the rewards are priceless. the bonds forged are something that no amount of money can buy.

Its hard work and often easier if we could also have run away - but stayed and did the hard slog of illnesses and worry etc but hopefully we reap the rewards and a firm relationship in later years.

One thing son always says to me in cards is 'thanks for being there for me' which is something I always have and will be - no matter what - which I hope means more than anything. My boys always know they come first with me.

Your day out sounds lovely - have seen a pic od snow in Derbyshire on Facebook and it looks magically like Narnia!

Sounds like a great day out Alex.

It was a great day out, we all really enjoyed it and as I stated yesterday not a great deal of money spent either which has to be a bonus? :)

Today we've mainly been playing about in the snow as well as eating and drinking far too much. No money spent, no sales attended, quite good for us! The snow has become very icy out on the roads and we seem to have been forecast 2-3 days of freezing fog, so not sure the plans for Monday and Tuesday will work out now.
