Civil Service Interview NI

Might be useful for background knowledge... just to 'flavour' your answers.

The interview itself will only be around the competences as they are listed though. There will be no 'sing me a song from the top 40' or 'tell me how you would spend £105 million from a lotto win' type of questions.
CS panels have to adhere to strict criteria about ensuring each candidate gets the same opportunity.

Expect to get asked the usual questions, and likely sub questions will be 'and what was the biggest challenge you faced in this process?' or 'what lesson did you learn from this?' or 'what would you have changed if you did it again?'.

Other than that, they will stick to the main competence. I assume you have a list of the competences (9 seems to be an awful lot for a CS job) that they would have sent you. Your answers should focus on the content of those.

Yip, and the facts of civil service life, with its ever increasing sick leave, politicisation by republicans, omniprescence of nipsa which several times over the past few years has brought local government to a standstill, abolition of standards and qualifications in recruitment, including to senior management, really support your and not my point.


The sooner the CS here is whittled down to the size of the average shopping queue the better.

Just noticed this thread. I am also on the waiting list - number 203!!! I have emailed them for an update on where they are - I was made redundant last year and I am applying for new positions but not sure if I should take a temp job or permanent. Hopefully hear back from them soon!

I'm on the the list too, in the 130's. Haven't heard anything since returning my access NI form a couple of weeks ago. Have you had an update from your email yet?

I'm in the 160's and have not had any other info other than hearing that 74 have been allocated positions at the start of jan.


However I've heard that there could be up to 100 get placed over the next few months.

No....I received it through the post before Christmas.

I got this response:

Thank you for your email.

Currently we are pre clearing the top 100 Candidates that selected Area 1.

At present, taking into consideration the area you selected and the areas posts are required, we do not have timescales for the allocation of Candidates from this list.

After applying for EOII in 2011 and not getting past clearing first time round, I received an invitation to go to Stranmillis College in Dec. Didn't think I had done that well but got through to interview mid Jan.

Was convinced that I had flunked totally but got a letter 2 days later saying I being recommended for position and to forward one more required document for Access NI. No word of waiting list or area preferences.

Anyone any idea where the positions that need filled might be at present? I'm assuming greater Belfast but I have heard it might be outside that area currently.
