I had to pay capital gains tax on selling the rental property and I will need to pay tax on the final part of the income but i have reduced it down to only paying tax on half the income. Previously I paid tax on all the income but i have many letters from the Ex solicitor telling me I was to use the income to pay his bills as half the income was his so I am going with half the income was his and he gave it to me to cover his bills . My accountant is happy with this.
It might be raking over the old coals, but can your accountant explore the possibility of going back and amending some of your previous tax returns to only include half the income? Could be some 'free money'.

That is a really good idea and one i have been mulling over. I will discuss with my accountant. I was going to leave well alone but thinking it over I'm not sure.
On the one hand I don't want to stir up the issues, I just want to forget it. On the other hand I was had by him so maybe I should. Indecision reigns.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Perhaps try and look at it dispassionately as something the accountant will do, without you getting too involved in it. And anything that comes back to you can go into the Premium Bond/pet welfare pot. I doubt that you correcting your returns should directly start HMRC banging on his door. Your accountant would be able to clarify. My OH realised he had not put down a charitable contribution in his return and was just going to leave it. I said it's the principle of the matter, so he reopened his return, made the adjustment and is due an extra £72 back. You wouldn't walk past £72 lying on the street.Make £2025 in 2025

Everything in my life has changed. I'm MF but without adequate savings so I'm doing things in reverse and it seems time to start a new diary to go with my new life
I really hope some of you will hang out on my new thread too because I would just miss you too much if you did not. I survived because of real life support and online support and everyone of you has meant a lot over the last few years.
Watty's Awakening — MoneySavingExpert ForumDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

I have to say that is a lovely way of looking at it. A boost to the welfare fund or a start to the savings fund all good and yes I would not leave the money sitting on the road. Will talk to accountant.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

My new diary is here3 -
How odd some pages of my diary have disappeared?
And rather spookily it has disappeared at the point of the debate about the tax return reclaim.
My accountant has written the letter asking for the refund. It is a very good letter and it has sat on my desk for over a week. I am going to send it today. I flipped between leaving it in the past and moving on and reclaiming anyway.
I have finally decided to try and reclaim. If I get the refund I do, and, if I do not then that is ok too.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

@Watty1 You realise this is your old diary not the new one? Isn't the tax stuff where the old one ended?
