It seems to work..... System Restore from Recovery Console did the job.

What can I say: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for having patience with me.

I'll now shut the PC down and hopefully it'lll all be OK in the morning when I check it out :)

ALL the best ..... you stars :)

There was a dodgy Window Update that stopped some systems from booting fully, though I wasn't sure if it affected XP systems. I think they've pulled it, so hopefully it won't re-install itself.
If it does, System Restore and we'll hide the offending update via Windows Update.

It's good that you saw it through. :T

The PCs got some other issues to be fixed, but at least the PC is usable for emails

Next problem to fix is that many/most webpages won't load. e.g. google.co.uk - yahoo.co.uk loads, but if you try searching in the search box it says "page cannot load"..... but the emails are on yahoo and the email login page can be reached (she's not tried logging in yet) ... so it's a start and the PC itself is working.

I've done a restore back to the oldest date, which was, peculiarly, 2 August 2013 and none earlier....

I really think that now you are in, that you should back up any important data and run a clean install.
Then put the data back and use Macrium Reflect to create a recovery image.

    Hi,

Hope you dont mind me also asking for help as I have the same problem. My Dell mini Laptop also cant find the OS, it happened about July 13. Was working normally, then refused to start up the next morning. I dont have CD/DVD but do have a USB slot.

What should I load onto a memory stick to restart XP?

Boot in the the BIOS Setup using the F2 key. See if the hard drive is listed there.

What is the Service Tag written at the bottom of the Netbook?
