OP, when choosing a perfume you have to wear it on your skin for at least 10 mins as they change on your skin. As there are so many it might take you a long time to find perfumes you love, as we all occasionally buy a mistake. You could try buying packs of miniatures or trying friends perfumes to get an idea before purchasing.

For day time I love using Armani She and J'Adore Dior, for evening I love Gucci Rush or Guerlain Insolence. I've had a few people comment when I wore Gucci Rush and I even wore it for my wedding as I love it that much.

I love Kenzo Jungle. In m youth I loved Cachet & this is the only perfume that iI've come across that rivals it. I'm not good with flowery smells (trust me, if you could see me you'd appreciate that) but the Kenzo Jungle is just perfect on me - & seems to be a bit unusual.

    Jean Paul Gautier's Classique.

This is a gorgeous perfume but unfortunately the exquisite packaging makes it an expensive option. I bought just a small bottle of the EDT for my mum and it was almost £30. The bigger ones sell for about £65-70, I think!

OP you might want to think about whether you want the Eau de Parfum version of whatever fragrance you're buying or the EDT, which tend to be cheaper, but not as strong-smelling?

Another vote here for Issey Miyake's L'Eau d'Issey. It's quite subtle but it's a nice fragrance. Personally I don't like it when perfumes smell too strong, especially when you've got a room full of people all wearing different (and often clashing) strong perfumes.

When money's been tight I have also been known to use good old Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers, which you can get in Superdrug for about £7 :money:

  • I'm not fond of musky/flowery scents and prefer something a little more subtle/fruity...my current favourite is L'eau by Kenzo
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
  • I love CK one and O de Lancôme, for day time and Shalimar by Guerlain for special occasions.
Anyone remember Aqua Manda, from the 70's, I'd love to smell that again.

    Just [STRIKE]nosy[/STRIKE] curious really. :D

I'm sure it will come as no surprise to some of you to find out I don't have/wear perfume :rotfl: but as part of my 'new me' plan I'm going to get some samples to see what I like then son is going to buy me some for my birthday when it comes.

I used to like D&G Light Blue (I'm not fond of 'heavy' smells iyswim).

    What do you wear?

You need to narrow down the type of perfume you like (eg 'floral') then ask the SA to spray some paper sticks (and label them). Fan them seperately, walk out of the shop and smell them after a while...see if you can narrow it down to 2, try one on each wrist, and, again, walk away and see which one had the middle nots you like. The intial 'top notes' don't last long.

Ideally if you can get some sample bottles then that will give you time to properly choose. But again, a bit of initial research will pay dividends. A really good SA will find out what you have liked before and take it from there.

I love a lot of Givenchy fragrances; my mum wears Ysatis; but on me they go to nothing so they're not for me.

    My current favourites are:

    Ralph Lauren Big Pony 4
    Nina Ricci Nina
    Paco Rabanne Black XS
    Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy

There are loads more that I love but I only have these right now.

A tip if you're going to test perfumes, make sure you have a pen and lots of pockets. That way you can make sure you remember which is which (for the shops that don't have branded test strips) and by keeping them separate the scents wont mingles and blend together.

Once you've narrowed down a few on test strips (take them home and leave them a good few hours to make sure there is not bad after scent) then follow Kynthia's advice and spray some on you and see what it's like after a few hours.

There are a few perfumes I really like the smell of but they just don't smell right on me.
  • I have just purchased Armani Si which I am in love with!

    This is really good advice.

    Its not something to rush.

Any perfume smells nice and is enjoyable when you squirt it on. The right perfume can set the mood to uplift you a bit on a rough day, make you feel a bit sexier when your confidence flags, and make your husband smile when he kisses you and say 'mmmm, you smell of that time we......' :). Its a powerful thing, scent.
