    I think the easiest way now (unless Nifty's got a better suggestion) might be to back up & factory restore it.

    I have done the factory restore now and it seems ok. Had a couple of issues with microsoft update needing xp and ie8 to be updated before it would let me update it! (downloaded the essential updates to a data stick from another pc and installed them from that).

    So will se how it goes.

    All seems fine. Downloaded the previous programs I had, except Office but using Open Office now (what a great package that is!.). The restore to Factory settings has certainly cleared some crap from the laptop, boot up time has more than halved and Firefox seems to be a lighter and faster Browser and even my Garmin uploads don't stall now!

    All in all extremely pleased.
