If it won't complete than the problems may be due to the disk failing.

Ah. New laptop time then if it is that?

No. Possibly a new hard disk, but it's not definite that it is a drive dying yet.

This is a link to a website that might help

    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-steps-to-take-when-you-discover-malware-on-your-computer/

Lots of info here especially if you look at number 3 the article talks about booting from a live disk and gives links to various anti-virus/malware companies that have a program that you can download and burn to a disk, the computer can then be set to boot from this disk and the program runs a scan.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks for the link baxie.

I'm following a procedure with Waddler_8 at the moment and will carry on with that until the process is exhausted but very many thanks.

    Just ran the sfc /scannow

It has come up with a "Windows file protection" box that states

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.

Insert your Windows Professional XP servic pack 3 CD now"

I'm running XP Media centre version 2000 with service pack 3.

    Thanks

Edit the XP version date is 2002 not 2000

Does this machine actually have a full model number? '2003 model' is a bit vague.

    Acer Aspire 5633WLMi

It has had a 4gb Ram upgrade (3gb available)
    Core 2 duo T5500 1.66 GHz
    120GB HDD

I'm not so sure the stickers on my laptop are original now.

I bought it in August 2006 from the Local PC shop. I was told that it was a 2003 laptop but having just googled this model it says it was first released in August 2006 and although the basic spec matches the labels, the Windows version should be 2005 if it is a 5630??

The created date for the oldest programs (Acer's own programs) are August 2006.

So I've either got an older machine with dodgy labels (including the model number on the screen bezel) or I've got a newer machine than I was told.
