  • Had a young chap at the door today; he was wearing a Red Cross tabard and a chuggers clipboard. Before I could say "on your bike", he greets me with "I'm not a cold caller - I'm a product volume improver!!!
I had to chuckle but still sent him on his way. Whatever next ?

You should have said, "...and this isn't slamming the door, it's brusquely moving a wooden item to obfuscate the recipient on the other side."
  • I had a call: "If you had ten thousand pounds, what would you spend it on -- a new kitchen, double galzing, etc. I let him go on."

I told him I would give it to the telephone preference service, as it obviously wasn't working properly at present.

For some reason, he called me a c^^t.

Well TPS would never work even if you give them this money you really have not won as you are being called from outside the UK

If I put any more 'no cold callers' signs on my door you won't be able to see my door. But still they come. The most recent was someone trying to get support for a charity for the blind. He insisted that he wasn't a cold caller because he represented a charity. After several rounds of 'you're a cold caller' 'I'm not a cold caller' I got bored and advised him to google cold calling. The previous one was from an energy company and I've since learned that they have a code of practice which forbids them from knocking at a door bearing a 'no cold callers' sign so I will hit them with that next time. Prior to that I had someone selling cavity wall insulation who apparently wasn't a cold caller because 'I work for your council'. Then there are the Jehovah's Witnesses.

I don't actually like being rude to people and don't like conflict but I am sick and tired of being harassed in my own home. Any advice anyone?

    Just don't answer your door?

I disconnected my doorbell..when I'm expecting someone I'll know they'll turn up, otherwise I'm uninterested as to who might be at the door.
I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

  • My sign says "No callers, door will not be answered!!!" and it's very rare anyone knocks on my door and I live three streets away from a Kingdom Hall -in fact I've even seen leaflet people skip past my house lol

I try to sell them something, it's good practice.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • Ask to see identity badge. Look at it carefully. Get a magnifying glass. Ask if there is a number you can ring to verify it is genuine. Shut the door. Cut up the Identity badge. Put it in an Envelope, post it through the letter box shouting "I've phoned the police about a strange blonde man who I think might be trying to con old ladies out of their savings, and they are sending a car, so I suggest you scarper."

Or you could do what my wife did the morning of her O level RE exam, and use the JW's as revision practise for 2 hours. She passed...
  • I just look through the front window and see them coming, and when they knock on the door they can see that i can see them and have no intention of coming to the door.

or of course, hide in the kitchen:)

A simple question/answer test to put to them is this:

    Q: Did I invite you?
    A: No
    Q: You're a cold caller then. Goodbye.
